Visit a national park for free!

So instead of 3 hour traffic jams we can have 6 hour ones? Nice.
Not if you visit the weekend previous to the free ones... 😀

lol

so, waiving an up to $25 dollar fee will thoroughly entice cash-strapped families to visit the park, as if the 5 or more hour travel wasn't holding them back.

I've never been to a national park in my life. I don't think there are any by me. 🙁 Some nice places, but all state or local.

Thats nice but the George Washington park I normally go to doesnt charge a fee, at least not when I go up. I dont use the public campgrounds though.

There's Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. You could probably make a weekend of it. It's been my experience that there are no bad National Parks. The five we've been to have all been awesome (Olympic this summer will be number six).

It's a nice program. I love how almost every reply in this thread is whining though. What is wrong with you people?

KLin is a recycler!
I'm not sure any of the parks here are really that worth it.

Whoa... you should see the reading on my ironymeter!

Nice bit of enticement to get the owners to actually visit their parks.

I don't pay to visit any of the National or Kahleeforneeya parks, recreation areas, etc. My blue "preferred parking pass" got me a lifetime free pass.😀

We're heading to either Yosemite or Sequoia/Kings Canyon within a few days...nice living so close that I can make either one a day trip.

I have a reservation at Yosemite for August, but we probably won't make it because the wife ran out of PTO (sick).

Maybe next year. 🙁

Yose-a-Mite campgrounds are always so dammed crowded...especially during the summer. Pretty place, just too crowded for me. We make the day trip during the week to avoid the bumper-to-bumper weekend crowds.

We have a couple of days slated for the back side of Yosemite...maybe at Mammoth Lakes. There's a nice Westin there for me to camp in...😀

Our national park system is probably some of the best spending we do as a government (assuming it isn't filled with waste and fraud)

Been to four in the last year and they were all beautiful (although I suggest skipping Everglades during dry season)

IMO, the concession biz ID full of waste and fraud...always has been, always will be. Too much money changing hands, too much politics in the system.

My sister is disabled and I remember from our summer vacations that we didn't have to pay to get in. It was also nice how you had access to where the shuttle buses go that are normally closed to public traffic. The Grand Canyon and it's outer rim loop was a good example of that.

Yep, the blue preferred parking pass lets me drive to lots of places that the general public can't. We took the Expedition up the gravel path to the Medicine Wheel in Wyoming, we've driven on a few closed roads in Yosemite as well.

If I have to walk much farther than 100 yards...I can't get there anymore.

Maybe they'll pave some of the hiking trails for me...or I'll have to file an ADA complaint for refusing to provide me with access...😛

Yeah, we went to Yosemite and got that additional access. I think it was to Mirror Lake or something like that.
