Visiontek Geforce 2 MX locking up in D3D games

I was wondering if anyone else is having problems with a Geforce 2 MX locking up in games that use Direct 3D. I have no problem running Open GL games, but when playing a D3D game, my computer locks up at a random time. This forces me to reboot my computer. My system specs are as follows:

AMD K6 2 500mhz
MSI 5169 motherboard
96 mb Ram
Visiontek Geforce 2 MX 32mb
Sonic Impact s90 pci sound card

I am using the 6.18 version nVidia ref drivers and nothing is overclocked in my system. I have tried all of the suggested fixes on the Geforce FAQ site, to no avail. I just installed a 300w power supply (had a 250w previously) and I still have the same problem. If anyone can help I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,
John Maloney

Sounds like the card is fine. Have you tried reinstalling DirectX? The newest version is 7.0a I believe.

Yes, that is one of the things I forgot to put in my initial post. I have reinstalled Direct X 7a after each video card driver install. Which has been twice, so far. I also have a heatsink and fan on the video card. I does not come standard with one.

Very odd.

So do many games work flawlessly in OpenGL and all of the games you have tried lock-up in Direct3d?

Well, to be honest I have run only one game in open GL, Homeworld by Relic. It runs great in 800x600 32bit color. I have only run 2 games with direct 3D, Diablo 2 and Aliens vs Predator. They both lock up and random times. I say random because it happens at different times when ever I try them out. I have yet to try Diablo 2 in Direct Draw mode, so I'm hoping it will work fine. My system runs fine all day long as long as I don't try to play these games. I guess I really need to try a few other games. Also, I have updated all of my AGP drivers and I'm running the newest version of BIOS on my motherboard. I just can figure this out.

I have the Prophet II MX and it does the same thing with UT. I get a random lockup at a random time when I play it using D3D. It just freezes and I have hit the reset button. The weird thing is, I can get on another computer on the network and access the hard drive when it locks up. Is it possible to play UT in OpenGL?

I have a Visiontek GeForce2 MX that was erratic until I lowered io voltage to 3.31v.

For Diablo2, I'd say you need more RAM and more horsepower.

Try this:
In 'Direct 3D Settings' check Enable Fog & Adjust Z-Buffer ONLY. Set 'Mipmap Detail Level' at Best Performance.

What tweek program do you use to lower the I/O voltage?

I didn't have a problem with Diablo 2 and my Diamond Monster Fusion, so I don't think I need more Ram or horsepower.(All though it would be nice to have.)

Hi there

blvdking - It is possible to play UT in OpenGL mode...just change video devices in UT, and display all driver modes rather than just the detected ones - the OpenGL driver is considered as a "test" rather than 100% perfect, so is not very fast - but it will let you see if Direct3D is in fact the problem

cheers

The way to lower I/O voltage is through the motherboard bios.

If one has a softjumper bios (like Abit's BF-6) this shouldn't be a problem.

I've had problems with the latest 6.18 drivers, regarding resolutions and my Prophet II MX and Winfast GF2 MX boards.

The most evident problems were in Deus Ex and Final Fantasy 7.

I had to revert back down to Detonator 2, 5.30 drivers.

All the problems went away.

I have a Leadtek MX and also seems to lock up in places. Only seems to have happened in Porsche 2000, so maybe it's the game.
Only had the comp for a week or so.
I will see what happens with some other games.

For everyone's info, I talked to Visiontek Tech support today about my problem. The tech said the Nvidia would be releasing a new version on the Det 3 Drivers soon. He said they were expecting them yesterday but the drivers were not released. They would hopefully come out today and he's waiting for the new drivers because there are evidently other people having problems. These new drivers are supposed to fix a lot of the problems with the MX cards. The only problem would be that Nvidia releases drivers to the manufactures first and then post them on the site about a week later. So if you now somewhere that posts them early check them tonight or tomorrow and the drivers might be there.
