Vision vs Ipod 5th gen sound quality

for those who have heard both on Identical equipment, is it worth it? I will be using pelican headbangers which are very good headphones with an external amp...

I could switch and maybe even make $20 on the deal. If the sound quality is even subjectively slightly better I think I want to do it...

Well after looking them over. They both support Audio up to 320kbs in various formats. Apples AAC and Apple Lossless, AIFF and WAV will give better sound quality on the ipod being lossless codecs. For almost all of the other specs they are identical. The ipod 30g and 80g 5.5 are much thinner than the 30g Vision M.

The Vision M does have better support for more video formats, but lacks support for H.264 which is a much better MPEG4 format which the Ipod supports. Getting video into the MP4 H.264 can be a pain at times, but is getting easier since Itunes now supports conversion, although much slower then other programs like Nero Recode 2. There are also free programs like Videora which are faster. Video output is 640x480 for the Ipod and 720x576 for the Vision M although I don't know the player can play a larger resolution video. I know the Ipod can play the 640x480 video.

Topic should be moved to peripherals.

Peripherals? Not really. These are discreet devices that operate without being connected to any computer. In the same category as digital cameras, etc. General hardware seems to me to be the most appropriate place.

The response to OP was excellent. 🙂

I'd pick up a Creative solely because iTunes is the most frustrating piece of crap ever designed. As for quality, I can't say I can give any good direct comparisons but I was very impressed with the Zen's video quality.

IMO, ipods sound like crap. Just hook one up to a decent hi-fi system and you will hear how lousy ipods really sound. Get the Creative, at least they have a REAL equalizer.

the limiting factor is your headphones, not the ipod.
as for the last guy claiming you need an equalizer when hooking it up to a "decent hifi" system.. err makes no sense😛 reviews i've seen on the creatives don't rate it much higher on sound quality if at all. there is a lot of senseless apple hate out there.

Where oh where did I say you need an equalizer when hooking it up to a decent hifi? ipods have no equalization, just presets. ALL of CLs mp3 players from the cheapest 50 buck player had a full equalizer, not some BS preset. Its such a simple thing to add yet apple has yet to implement it. Bass and treble is enough, yet ipods dont even have that.

Yes, decent headphones is a factor. I hate seeing so many ipod on the train, bus or street and everyone is using the ugly white earbuds! You spend hundreds of bucks and use the package earbuds? I call them pod-people (sheep). 🙂 I have 2 ipods and only use em on fishing trips as I dont care if it gets beat up, but I use decent headphones, not the crap in the box. Mostly I use my Archos DVR-500 for music, video and video recording, which, IMO, blows the pod away.
