Here is the deal.. i built my system about 4-5 months ago and put XP on it, i was just putzing around one day with my user account, and i set it to "privite" Ever seice, nobody has every been able to see me on a LAN, but i can ALMOST always see them. I tried to de-privatize it, but it didn't seem to work. Any suggestions? Thanks

Did you try entering the host instead of browsing? Like in "Add new Network Place" type in '\\serverNETBIOSname\sharename'??? I take it it's part of the same Workgroup?

umm.. I'm not real good with networking. And this isn't at a company, i mean when we have our LAN parties and want to share files with each other, no body can access my computer, but we always can see each other during games. there is no dedicated server, just one of us hosts the game. Yes i have run the wizzard and we are all in the same workgroup. I guess i don't know what else to tell you..?? If that doesn't answer, could you be more specific, please, on exactly what you mean.. i'm a horrible noobie to networks. Thanks alot.

Oh yeah.. the other weird thing, when i look for thier computer, i always have to type in thier IP while most everyone else just has to type in \\"computer's name" idk if that is the same problem or not... almost considering reinstalling XP...

As far as that one goes,
Go into your TCP/IP properties, click advanced, then under the WINS tab, make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled.
What OSs are everone else running?
You may need to enable the guest account to allow other people to access your PC depending on your configuration.
Also, make sure that you're not running the XP firewall:
Go into your connection's settings, click the advanced tab, and make sure that the internet connection firewall box is unchecked.

When you say that you set your User Account to 'private,' what do you mean?

ok, i changes the NETBIOS setting and the firewall.. about the "privite" setting, i don't even remember how i did it... Something in "control panal" then "user accounts" i was setting a password maybe.. but it asked if i would like to make this account "privite" for some reason i said yes thinking i could change it, well i could never change it and i have never again saw that option.. so i don't really know.. thanks for the help though, any more suggestions would be great:)

with the user account, go into your control panel/users and select your account - there is an option to change the account type - change it to administrator if it is not already set to that.

go into your network card properties and make sure you have "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" checked and "Client for Microsoft Networks"

see if that helps
