u have to get a new visa, most go in for a F-1 student visa provided that they can pony up the tuition.

other than that, refugee status ... which is NOT s'thing u'd want to do unless its legit.

Visa is everywhere you wanna be. So it shouldn't matter if you're only legal in one country.

Once the person leaves the program, their status (contingent on being in the program) is no longer valid, and they have a certain number of days to leave the country or go "out of status". If you go out of status, fixing the problem becomes very difficult. There is no way to just change the status without first leaving the country and then returning under a valid visa.

They can join a new program or do self-placement depending upon who initially sponsored their visa. Did they use a program like CHI (Cultural Homestay International) or others? If so, they can contact them and start a new job and keep in status.

Are they subject to the two year rule?

Good luck. Normally, it takes 180 days of non-compliance to lose status. They do not want to do that. The best way is to do everything legally and slowly even if it is a painful process.

I "upgraded" to Vista Premium last week on a new system build and a lot of my old software doesn't work anymore. :( I should have gone with XP Pro.

so basically it's 180 days until status is fully revoked?
