If you're over 18, go with a secured card if you can't get your parents to cosign a real credit card. Visa Buxx type cards are useless. They don't help your credit whatsoever, and for what they do, a check card is just as good and costs less. Wells Fargo has a secured Visa that can be opened with $300 deposit, $18 annual fee, and I believe they guarantee you graduation to an unsecured card after 1 year if you follow certain simple steps (have credit score of 600 after one year, never go over limit, always pay on time, etc).
