visa gift card question

pontifex

I was looking at visa gift cards and it says that you can't buy anything that exceeds the amount of the card.

now, would it be ok if you paid for part of it with this card and then used cash or another card or do they mean you can't use it at all for purchases exceeding the card amount?

I had a $50 one and bought an Xbox game that came out to $60 some-odd dollars with tax at Game Stop. Dude ran the card through then took cash for the rest. I don't know if he broke any rules doing it but he seemed fine with that.

Depends on the vender. Most stores have the capability for multiple payments on one purchase, some stores do not. Now, just because a store has that capability doesn't mean the clerk has the mental ability to use two or more forms of payments. The safest bet is to bring cash for the remainder just in case.

Gift cards like that are iffy. For example, restaurants often tack on 20% for tip before you have tipped and correct it later. That screws up your gift card since you can't go over the limit. Same with gas pumps, the gas pump charges a set amount when you swipe it and corrects the amount later. The precharges are intended to make certain that you have enough of a balance to complete a typical purchase. But when you want to use the last penny of your card, you aren't making a typical purchase.
