Rented from Budget, got into a minor scrape with another car (no ticket, but failure to yield on me--it was icy out), started the claim process.
Anyone get to do this before? How painless was it (i.e. rental company just dealt with cc insurance division versus slapping a huge charge on card)?
Just curious as to how much of a pain in the arse this is gonna be.
UPDATE 3/18/05:
Everything finally got mailed out last week (had to wait for credit card statement, police report, get a notarized letter saying I didn't have personal auto insurance, get the repair estimate/totals).
It's status is listed as pending right now online. Supposed to take about 2 weeks.
And no, Budget didn't charge my card. I simply noted on their damage form that it was going through my credit card.
And from the Visa site:
So if you have one, you have it automatically, it's not one of the optional features.
Will post a final update (hopefully) soon.
UPDATE 3/21/05 (AGAIN.....)
Budget has sent a couple of nasty-grams out (in essence, they want SOMEONE to pay up), just called them and spoke to someone who called over to VISA to check on the claim status, they said it was in review and they should be getting a check in a few days and she would put the proper notations on the file (basically, I just want them to note I called and VISA should be giving them money).
Also, just to clarify, I did not have any personal auto insurance (our car and it's insurance are solely in my wife's name) so that's why I got to use this. From the Visa site:
So it means you would have to file a claim against your auto insurance policy I guess(and I would assume any self-respecting insurance company would use that to jack your rates sky-high), although I suppose if you have the bare minimum coverage renter's insurance might not be on there anyway.
So.....hopefully this will be all done soon, with a happy ending.
LAST UPDATE 4/5/05
YAY!
VISA has the check ($1019.12) going out for the full amount today. So, that's the end of the story 🙂

Visa Auto Rental CDW Program is "secondary" coverage within your country of residence and "primary" coverage outside your country of residence.
Within your country of residence, coverage is on a "secondary" insurance basis. It does not duplicate insurance provided by or purchased through the car rental company; it will not pay for losses reimbursed by your own insurer, employer, employer's insurance, or any other valid insurance. However, it will pay for the outstanding deductible portion or other charges not covered by your primary automobile insurance policy or if you do not have automobile insurance.
Outside your country of residence, coverage is primary where available. You do not have to claim payment from any other source of insurance before receiving coverage under the policy.
So it means you would have to file a claim against your auto insurance policy I guess(and I would assume any self-respecting insurance company would use that to jack your rates sky-high), although I suppose if you have the bare minimum coverage renter's insurance might not be on there anyway.
