Virus/Trojan question

Hello,
Has anyone experienced a virus/trojan that actually shuts the computer down if you try to run a scan? I was working on a laptop that doesn't have any AV software on it,(not mine) & I was able to run AdAware and get rid of a bunch of stuff (155 hits). I then ran SpyBot S & D and it ran for about 10 minutes then the laptop shut down. I installed NortonAV-2003 and it shuts down (whole laptop) after about 10-15 minutes of scanning. Thought it might also be heat related, but it seems to run OK when the scans aren't running.

It's using WinXP Home with an NTFS partition, so I haven't quite figured out how to do a DOS scan with it. I'm going to try this next: "click here" & hopefully have some luck.
Thanks🙂

Try one of the free online virus checkers, such as this one. But no, I've never heard of a virus which can shut the machine down when running scans but thats certainly not to say one doesn't exist.

The shutdowns may be heat related. Try scanning a few folders at a time, with a break in between, to eliminate that possibility. I'll also recommend the online scanner that Mitzi mentioned if you continue to have problems.

Its quite possible its a corrupt installation or a corrupt issue with the shared .dll files that norton & xp share.

Make sure you don't have anything else running in the background when you run the scan.
Disable all startups & non-microsoft services.. including norton. Restart.

Then manually start norton and run a scan.

If it was overheating then it should also be shutting down regardless of NortonAntivirus.
