virus that takes out video cards?

Hi, I have a MSI 655 MAX motherboard with a MSI TI 4200 8x video card. I had the whole system running for 5 months just great. I was playing a game and the computer completely froze. I rebooted and it wouldn't go to windows. I kept restarting trying to do stuff and it kept degenerating with some obvious video problems, to the point it would only do the opening screen before any booting. Well after quite a bit of troubleshooting I deduced that it was the video card. I took an old PCI video card and put that in and it ran right away 😀, but after say a couple hours of running it crashed. Now I am kicked out and looking at the lights on the D-bracket I am now also having memory problems. Normally it was freezing on the VGA stuff.

Is there a virus that attacks the video part of a system?

Also I have mucked around moving the memory around constantly, but to no avail. What would be wrong with the memory stuff. It is new memory as well?.?

Any ideas??? :disgust:

Haven't heard of a virus doing that.

IMHO either:

1. You're REALLY unlucky.

2. Your PSU/Motherboard has started doing something weird after it's been on a while - the result being things go mad and bad - the video rather obviously.

3. It's not your video card at all - it's somehow your monitor - and it's intermittent (such that you thought by changing the graphics card you fixed it - but in fact the problem had temporarily disappeared whilst you changed cards).

4. Run memtest86 just to be sure about your memroy's role in all of this.

Good luck,

Andy

Its not the monitor. I switch that out with anouther computer and it works fine. The "D-BRACKET" has little lights on it that let you monitor the system and tell if something is wrong. :frown: Some thing IS wrong with the system.

Could you elaborate on what the "D-BRACKET" is. Thanks.

Have you tried to run memtest86?

Cheers,

Andy
