Everything in my hard drives were destroyed today on my main computer and the unique thing about it is that every directory names are in perfect order, but all the files are missing and under DOS, volume info reports free space very close to the whole partition size. I am almost certain this is a result of nasty virus or a hacking attempt. I lean toward the former. The quesiton is are there any viruses that does what I just described and do you happen to know what its called? If I could narrow it down to certain cause, finding a solution for it would certainly be easier.

happened to me, and my roomate when a nasty virus ran amuck on the school computer network. If you have WD, try using datalifeguard to see if you can salvage your date. If not.... re-format. Do low-level format (write zeros) to your hardrive. It sucks, but at least you won't have to buy a new hardrive. There are services that let you recover data from your hardrive for a fee, but i heard they run at about $100 a meg.... so if all you have is porn or games.... its not worth it. If its a business invoice or something thats real valuable.... well, you know what to do.

If you can boot, then just backup the files. If you can't, see above. :D
