Virus question

How does a virus just "appear" in one's Firefox cache? I wasn't downloading anything but suddenly Kaspersky was giving me a virus warning. Thanks.

Every time you browse the web, you're actually downloading files. When a website has malicious code written in to it and you access it, you're downloading that code onto your sytem. Kapersky just happened to recognize it when it happened. I can go into more detail if you'd like, but thats a simple explanation as to what happened.
