Virus question!

Someone sent me a .rar file I scanned it and it was clean. I just updated all the virus definitions using Nortons. I did not run the file but I suspect that this guy sent me a virus. How can I be certain? Are there any other virus scanners that are free that will check to see if this is some type of virus?
 
I did he isn't responding. Could it be he just coded it to be a trojan horse or something like that? I mean it isn't being picked up by Nortons or so far Trend Micro's free online scan. My firewall is not detecting any outbound connections or it has not blocked any outbound connections to any suspecious IPs.
