Virus question from a n00b

Yes, I suck at teh Intarweb.

I scanned an attachment in an e-mail that I received and got:
Scan result: Virus W32.Bugbear.B.Dam found. File not cleaned.

Is this an actual virus, or is Dr. Norton taunting me?

The reason I asked is because the e-mail (supposedly) came from an @stanford.edu address, and was ostensibly from promodart., with whom I have done business in the past.
