Virus problem????

I am trying to help a friend fix his computer but something is very wrong. For some reason the explorer.exe program is taking up 99% which is using like 140,000 k when you open task manager. This is slowing his computer down to a crawl. If anybody has any ideas on how to fix this or how to maybe just stop this from happening that would be great.
