Virus on Computer: Computer shuts down by itself

My friend's computer is shutting down by itself. He cannot run the antivirus software he just bought and does not have a rescue disk.

What are his options?

Does he get the 60 second warning until reboot warning?

If the computer is booting up and then shuts down without rebooting, I would look for a heat issue or maybe bad power supply. Does he get any error messages before the shut down or does it just go off?
