Virus infection WHAT DO I DO, all data GONE

ok im under C: now with a win ME start up disk, i think all the virus is gone but i cant see any data on C:, the files are still there, coz the free space are 2801 megs, i have a 5 gig hard drive, can i use any sort of program to recover the data, coz they are extremely important, oh and if anyone know where to get the serial code or the program lost and found, please write it down.

and oh this is being infected by a virus along with an email, i had to get into DOS to get rid of it, this is my laptop, which has a 500 mhz celeron and a 64mb ram.

please guys, help

which virus hit your lappy and can you see any of the programs on the C drive?

I'll assume your using another computer to get onto the internet. Go here and choose a program that best suits your needs for recovering your data.

Hope this helps ya, and use norton Anti virus 2000 with weekly live updates for better virus protection next time. I live by norton and a firewall for system protection and havent had a break-in or virus problem for a year.

Sounds like "Offensive" virus - read about it here...http://www.vnunet.com/News/1124976

It apparently puts loads of entries into Windows registry, virtually rendering Windows useless.

I would have though the scanreg /restore command would fix it.  This can be run from a command prompt - I would give it a try.

You should make sure that the partition is still intact - run fdisk and view the partition listing. if it says something like file system unknown you might as well debug and reload.
if its that important to you there are several companys that will help you out.. ontrack... ect.. cant remember all of them.

If the partition is intact then maybe try a deltree of windows(course if you cant see any files on the drive this might be kinda hard) or a dirty install.
