Virus help for a friends PC

This a friends PC, so I don't have direct access, but the problem is this:
Something has disabled the McAfee security center and she continously keeps getting annoying popups telling her this. We've tried to uninstall from different user accounts, and from safe mode, but it states that "an error has occured" and it closes the uninstall. Trying to reinstall over the existing program also results in an error and the program closing.

Her PC seems to run Ok, so I'm not sure what really caused this, so I'm only guessign that this is due to a virus/trojan/malware, or the like. She did get a couple of BSOD's at the same exact time this all started, but hasn't gotten any since then.

I'm not sure what to have her do next other than a reformat. Any suggestions would be great.

Try going to www.avgfree.com and downloading avg free (it is a virus scanner) and use that as a virus scanner, it will work ok untill you get McAfee fixed

Can it be used if McAfee is still installed?

Yes, avg does not interfere with any virus scan programs. You can use avg with any virus scan installed
