ever since i set up a router for me and my housemates to have shared internet ive been getting weird trojan viruses on my comp
before that i hadnt had a virus in years.

is there any way i could get a virus from the LAN even though im not sharing files or allowing access to my hd?

thx

If you're worried about it , get a firewall running asap. I had the same problem with my fileserver and once I got Zone Alarm installed I realized I had about 4 trojans on my system that were phoning home to an external IP! Then the IP was trying to initiate VPNs into the server. W/o a firewall, I never would have known about them or have been able to figure out what the problem was and how to clean them out.

i have 2 or 3 high risk subseven trojan horse attacks a day. i think it happens if you install a program from unknown source such as kazaa. once the program is installed, someone will keep trying to connect to your computer to spy or take stuff over. i have norton antivirus 2003/norton personal firewall 2003 & they work great in stopping outsiders from acessing the computer.

wtf does this have to do with General Hardware?

not much, but adaware 6 is really good at finding trojans, viruses, and dataminers, it's free!

(doesnt stop them from coming on, but cleans them off)

and wtf did your post have to do with my thread?
The mods put the descrpitions (the below is for the General Hardware section) for a reason.
General Computer Hardware Discussion. This is the place to discuss the latest computer hardware issues and technology. Please keep the discussion ON TOPIC, and covering computer hardware ONLY.
And yes. There are a large number of viruses and trojans that can be spread via LAN.

if you're running xp, disable simple file sharing ASAP. and don't give anyone else write permissions to any of your network shares.

I recently installed ZoneAlarm and many differenet computers started pinging my computer. I only knew this cause zonealarm kept popping up and saying it. I posted about it in the network forum and people said that it was viruses. They ping other computers, and then when they get a response they send the virus.

A lil story.

I use to work at a large univeristy, and when the nachi virus hit, it infected everything on the network. To do some testing, we took a brand new Dell PC out of the box, turned it on, and within 3 seconds, it was infected. CRAZy!!!

Firewall and anti-virus software is always a wise precaution, however you could also try Anti-Trojan 5.5 ,I use it as a backup to my firewall & AV software, btw you can try the full version free for 14 days from the above link.
