Somebody using Hyper-V on Dell Optiplex 740.

"The biggest issue was getting the Hyper-V virtual instance to start. The system was not supporting the virtualization of the hardware. An upgrade to the bios (Dell Optiplex 740 version 1.2.3) and flipping the a couple switches in the bios (TPM Activation= Deactivate and No Execute = Off) fixed the issue."
 
I want to understand this, so bear with me if this was already asked and answered.

If I am running Windows 7 64 RC, will I be able to install XP mode 32 bit and finally use my Canon i850 again? That would be too sweet if true!

Thank you for that tip. I had it on my to-do list to call Dell about this since January but more urgent things keep popping up. When I followed up on this tip though, the rep at Dell didn't think it would apply to my motherboard...I may have a processor that supports virtualization without a computer to use with Hyper-V.😕 Since I'm not using that machine for Win7 testing, I guess I won't know for sure until I can upgrade the machine with Windows 7 RTM.
 
I used an older AMD utility to verify that the CPU supports virtualization. According to the Dell rep though, the motherboard in my machine does not.

I'd be interested in knowing how the poster from your other message knew to use those two switches (TPM and NoExecute) to enable it because there is nothing in any documentation I've seen that explains how to enable it.

I'll definitely be looking at it again when I upgrade the machine to Windows 7.

You don't know until you try it yourself, unfortunately. (Or someone else confirms it)

On my RC copy (64-bit), the XP mode doesn't recognize a USB joystick and a USB wireless card. Most (all?) thumb drives have been recognized so far.
 
I have a question regarding the XP Mode. I just upgraded to Windows 7 Enterprise x64 yesterday. I see that the XP Mode download is in RC status right now. When it goes gold, can I uninstall the RC version or will an in-place upgrade be possible? That is the only thing stopping me from installing XP Mode now.
