Virtual PC and antivirus program

Dari

Lifer
I have Vista Ultimate 64-bit and VPC running XP Home (for SAS). Do I have to install another antivirus program in XP or will the native antivirus take care of things?

You have to install another antivirus program in XP. It would be sensible to lock XP down just as usual: non-Admin user account if possible, patching, checking for vulnerable stuff, etc.

Thanx. Are there any free antivirus programs out there that's light on memory and processor use? I only use XP for SAS.

Pardon me for not knowing, but what is SAS? If it's a software program that has problems running in Vista, you might try running it in WinXP Compatibility Mode (right-click it, Properties, Compatibility tab) and see if it can be teased into working in Vista that way.

Anyway... free antivirus, not too heavy, effective... I'd suggest AntiVir if it were me. If your SAS software will function in a Limited user account, that's also a major security upgrade. If you have XP Professional or XP MCE, you can also add a Software Restriction Policy.

If the program has problems when it's run in a Limited account, then LMK and I could suggest a modified plan. If so, mention which version of WinXP you use (Home, Pro, MCE). Make sure the software installs to a location within C:\Program Files and not directly in the root of C: or something dumb like that.

SAS won't run on Windows Vista 64-bit, period. I tried everything and even SAS doesn't support it so it was useless going further. I had XP Home lying around and VPC was free so I had nothing to lose. It's actually pretty cool, VPC. I think I may add Linux later on.
