I upgraded to vista, but I need to use some software I had installed in XP. (can't get it installed in vista yet due to activation. waiting for the company's response which is taking a while)

If I install virtual PC 2007, can I restore my old windows XP pro image and run XP there?

Never used virtual PC before so I don't really know how it works.

either way, I am running acronis in a virtual machine, and sharing my backup over the network.

looks like it will work despite what Microsoft.com says.

i've been able to restore a ghost image to vpc before, but xp will need to deal with the fact that the emulated hardware is almost definitely different than what your image was created from.

Yep, the restore of the image will work like a champ but you're basically doing a dissimilar hardware restore. Since all the VPC hardware has inbox drivers a Repair should sort out any issues.

Can I just say that since Skeedunt and Chrisg22 have the same Icon it really appeared like the OP was talking to himself until I got about halfway down the thread. Funny.

Eakers: Yep. The virtual video card only does what, 24bit color? RedHat at least defaults to something completely different so you have to edit your video via command line if you aren't careful during installation. Also note that linux wasn't a supported OS under 2004 although it did work.

Well despite MS's site, VPC 2007 DOES work on Vista home premium. However I ran into the problem that oog brought up about the hardware... it just didnt' work well at all.

I ended up fixing the program that I needed and it runs in Vista now. No more need to boot back into my XP image. I may, however install a linux distro in VPC 07 just for fun.
