Ok its been awhile since i did this and i reformated so i need to do it again, i can't remember if i need to make the mininumum and maximum the same or leave the mininmum at 0 and maximum at whatever, someone please help.

I think it's better to make the minimum and maximum virtual memory the same because the paging file will never change... (or was it another reason, can't remember and can't find the site where they were explaining why...) 😕

I always set the minimum at max at the same values too. You can really just let windows do it though, it doesn't make much difference. I think the idea is to save windows the need to resize the vm, and maybe helps cut down on fragmentation? i'm probably wrong though.

I've tried playing around with those numbers and never saw any performance gain. You might see some performance gain while benchmarking, but probably not enough performance gain to feel a difference while just using the computer.

Leave the min and max values the same, choose a value between 2 and 4X your physical memory. You may not notice a performance gain but the difference in system noise levels can be significant. If you hear a thrashing noise consistently from your hard drive that is usually caused when it rearranges the swap file. By setting it to a fixed size and defragging it regularly you can likely eliminate that annoyance entirely.

How do you defragment the swap file?

The defrag utility included in windows 2K doesn't seem to do it.

The best way to "defrag" your swap file is to set it set it to minimum size = 0 & maximum size = 0 and then click the SET button. Reboot the system. Upon logging in, you will receive an error stating that the paging file is too small yadda yadda yadda... Go back in and set the minimum and maximum size to a static size (to help reduce future fragmentation) and reboot the system again, even if it does not prompt you to do so.

Swap/Paging file will be clean as a whistle then.

I did a partition for my swap file. Don't ask me why, I just made it for fun... 😛 Now the problem is, my Windows XP don't stop telling me that my partition is full. I'm wondering if there's a way to disable this warning???

My partition is 800MB big and my swap file is 768MB (min and max). There's nothing else in this partition than the swap file. Any ideas?
