Virtual memory - CS:S lag

recently while i've been playing cs:s, i'd lag whenever i turn around or anything fires

i've also received "virtual memory too low" many times (only recently though)

do i have to decrease my vitual mem? increase it?

currently, the settings are 1536-3072mb (1 gig ram, 200gb hdd)
 
Have yu been installing any major apps recently? Antivirus/spyware blocker/etc. These can eat up quite a bit of RAM, but I think that 1 GB would be plenty. Have you checked for spyware/virii? It is ossible that these are eating up your RAM. Go into task manager and see what programs are chewing up the RAM...
 
well right now it's set at 1536mb to 3072mb

in task manager when im playing cs:s, the page file usage is always at the max (3GB~3072mb)

should i increase it?

btw, i read that if the computer is too virtual memory dependant, then it'll screw up the performance, is this true?
 
Yes because it will constantly be reading from the harddrive.

I recommend using msconfig and shutting down any unneccesary processes. Also I would scan for spyware with both SpyBot S&D and AdAware Pro and eliminate any bad programs trying to eat up processes.
 
I would set the page file to a static amount meaning 3072-3072 instead of having 1536 - 3072 expanding and contracting all the time. I would give that a shot.
 
Auto managed size should be fine
The dynamic allocation doesn't have visible performance hit.
I've seen benchmarks with different settings; Static, Dynamic and Auto
The performance difference is nil.
 
It seems your system's V-mem is correct, if you installed your OS with that 1gig of memory present, Windows XP will set the virtual memory to custom, for the appropriate ammount, if you set it to auto manage, it will use the same settings.

I'm not sure what it is but you should def not be having a problem with your settings.

I know this I wasn't saying there was a perfromance penalty or anything of the sort for having it set up like that, it IS actually how I have mine set. I was just suggesting to see if having a static size corrects his problem.
 
thx guys, i'll give 3072mb-3072mb a try (in about 3 days, i gotta leave my comp 24/7 for some important downloading and uploading)

is that doesn't work, what are the other possible solutions?
