Not sure where I should be posting this, but eh..

I've got some MPEG movies that I'd really like to compress.. I downloaded virtual dub, selected Divx 5 for the compression, the framerates and audio remain the same, yet the file size INCREASES on every file. What the hell am I doing wrong?

haha.. how cute.. :D

MPEG = Compressed

so techincally you are trying to recompress an already compressed file. So what happens is divx puts its headers on it and then compresses a recompressed file that cant be compressed anymore. Hence you end up with a bigger file cause divx codec's header is larger than MPEG's header

get it?

That may not be the case. You're assuming he's setting Divx up with the same bitrate and audio quality as the mpeg. He can also be making it a higher bitrate and audio quality. While it doesn't gain anything in quality, the size will get bigger.

Select 1pass quality based
And select mp3 sound compression.

I think you have set 1pass normal with way to high bitrate and no sound compression, thats why you are getting bigger files.
