Just goes to show how getting a little respect helps you out in the polls.

They say the BCS doesn't take margin of victory into account for their rankings, but in a way, it does. The BCS uses an average of all the ranking services. The AP poll, particularly, will punish a team if they barely beat someone people think they should have killed.

That is DEAD on. The AP is the only poll I pay attention to. Look at NC State. They have BARELY won a lot of games including Duke(24-22) this weekend but are considered top 10? Give me a break. They haven't play ANYONE. ESPN/Coaches ranks NC State at like 7th while AP ranks them at around 14th which is more realistic.

Since I am an NC State fan, I'll have to defend them a bit. Why do you say they have barely won "a lot" of games? They have had 2 close games.....AT Texas Tech, which is a good, solid team, and vs. Duke the week after the UNC rivalry game.
NC State's average margin of victory is 21.
They lead the ACC in total offense and defense. They have the #1 rated QB in the nation. Yes, our schedule has been a bit weak by our normal standards, but we have pounded every single cupcake with the exception of Duke, and if you look at Duke this year, they ain't no cupcake anymore. Plus, we were obviously looking ahead to Clemson this Thursday night. All teams have a game like that during the year.
I think State is right about where they should be in the BCS, at #11. If we beat Clempson this week, I imagine that people will think we're a bit more legit than they do now.
I think Virginia Tech should be right about where we are. But, they are still riding that wave of respect that they've had since their appearance in the title game a few years ago. Teams that are perceived to be "elite" simply have to win a few games at the start of the season and they're automatically voted into the top 10-15. Southern Cal is a prime example. They haven't been an "elite" team in 20 years, but they are still considered a "quality" opponent even when they aren't very good. Name recognition is everything in NCAA football.
Notre Dame is another fraud that will be exposed by FSU this Saturday.

Please. NC State rocks and it deserves all the votes it receives. :D The game against Puke(24-22) was even closer than the score indicates. I was really impressed with the Duke kicker. I saw him make a 52-yarder, and he made it look easy. He attempted, and missed, what would have been a game winning 65-yard field goal at the end of the game. The whole stadium seemingly froze for a moment when he attempted the final kick. I was glad he missed :p

It's because they are #5 in both of the REAL polls. If they were 3rd in those polls, they would be just behind Miami and in 3rd.

And here is an FYI, the only two SEC teams ranked in the BCS are Georgia and LSU. Not exactly a stellar year for SEC football.

The fact is that Georgia (and Ohio State) could run the table and NOT get a birth in the championship game. If Miami and Oklahoma continue to win (which I think they will) and all four teams are undefeated, UM and OU would go.

The "system" that these stupid fvckers have devised in order to crown a "true" champion is SO flawed. All it is going to take is for three of the current six undefeated teams to go undefeated. I pray that it does happen and we have all the controversy that we had in '97/'94/etc. It will just go to show that this system does nothing more for college football that two human polls could. Remember, the BCS champion is only the automatic champ in the Coaches Poll (which is SUCH A BUNCH OF CRAP, DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THAT) and the AP poll voters can crown whoever the hell they want.

It seems like every year, there is SO much controversy (I hate to keep reusing that word, but it is appropriate) surrouding this system. I mean, come on.. Nebraska gets their doors blown off on national television, doesn't even make it to their conference championship game, but somehow still manages to backdoor into the championship game last year? I can't believe this system wasn't completely thrown out the window because of that.

NC State has a HORRIBLE strength of schedule and will be lucky to beat Clemson on Thursday. Phillip Rivers is a great QB, but that team has preyed on weak teams and their defense is not so good. They have gone out and taken care of buisness thus far, but their only "tough" game this year has been against a 4-4 Wake Forest team. It would not surprise me if NC State loses three or four of their last five games, if not all of them.

GO BLUE!!!

But realistically, unless we start calling better plays earlier in a game, and we can get into a consistent rhythm, it's gonna be hard to say how we'll finish. That loss to ND killed us, really....out of nowhere, we lose to that team, (not to say they aren't a good team) whereas a victory would've pumped us up for the rest of the season, since ND was getting hyped so much.

All that being said, Iowa and OSU should be very interesting games......too bad OSU's away this year.

I heard that! GO BLUE!!! :D I am a huge Michigan fan. Born and raised.

I am a little nervous about Iowa. They have played us close the last three times we have played them. I just hope our pass D can hold up.

As of right now, I have a pretty good feeling about the OSU game. Their success relies entirely on the run game. Michigan has been great at stopping the run. Krenzel is going to have to beat us. I have a feeling that Lloyd and the gang are going to do pretty well at the 'Shoe after last year's sub-par performance. Plus if OSU comes in undefeated, we all know they have no chance of beating UM. :D hahah

I would love to see UM run the table and head to the Rose Bowl. We defintely have to play the toughest Big Ten schedule this year (no NW or Indiana), so they are going to have to earn it. They don't have much of a chance at getting to the championship game, and this team definitely is not good enough to be there this year but stranger things have happened.

Go Notre Dame!

I totally agree that we need a 8 team playoff at the end of the year.

Well said. As you said not steller for SEC for come'on historically they beat the hell out of each other and still manage to whip people out of conference, bad.. One bad year and they fall way down on the charts? then, Nebraska still got the love this year.
Its really is sad they don't go to a 16 team championship bowl- four weeks and you'r done. Just limit the regular season games to 10 and it would be no different than the college bowl series now as far as time in concerened. One word Advertisers. They will never have it.

You think 94 and 97 was contriversial try 84. Oklahoma should have won but no BYU a team which never faced a top 20 went underfeated and did. Also BYU with thier 23-25 years olds should be playing NFL. but that's another rant.

Virginia Tech? Come on....who have they played? OU took out Texas who was #2 at the time and then crushed a top ten(or #13 depending on the poll you look at) team when they blasted Iowa State. The same can be said for Miami....they have played cupcakes and when they play a decent team, FSU, they almost got beat. I'm not saying the BCS is perfect but it is the system we have to deal with.

If you looked at Miami's schedule before the season started, you would have seen they had to play four teams that were ranked in the pre-season top 10 (Florida, FSU, Tennessee, Virginia Tech). Their schedule is definitely not the of the "cupcake" variety that we are so used to seeing with Miami.

And as for VaTech, they manhandled a very good LSU team, held Marshall and Byron Leftwich to 21 points and beat Texas A&M on the road. None of those were easy games.

Not to mention, if both of the aforementioned teams take care of buisness, you will be looking at a 1 vs. 3 game at the end of the year when they play each other.

I agree that OU is one of the two best teams in Div 1-A right now, and they are ranked appropriately. But don't sit here and tell me that Miami and VaTech haven't played anybody. That arguement would have floated in past years, but it is just not the case this year.

Man that Notre Dame game really bummed me out because we literally let the game slip out of our hands. Not to mention that we got screwed by the refs on a ND touchdown that shouldn't have counted. :(

It'd be great to see us go to the Rose Bowl. But I think more than OSU, the greatest threat to that is Iowa State. They have a solid team offensively, defensively, and their special teams blow ours away. I'm worried that saturday's game could go down to who is the better kicking team and considering the hawkeyes have arguably the best kicker in the league and we have two of the worst, that doesn't bode well. But one thing we have in that game is home field advantage - the rest will depend on whether Navarre comes through for us and if our defense can hold Banks' option/ pass attacks. I really believe if we can survive the Iowa State game, OSU won't be a problem, even away (unless Navarre goes cold again).
