slow the fvck down

Come to VA, I dare you lol. VA Police are hardcore about speed traps for revenue. Like the OP, I never had a speeding ticket until I moved to VA.

I've gotten a ticket for going 26 in a 25 and 48 in a 45. The local cops know it isn't worth the price of gas to drive to the court house to contest it.

So I got the first speeding ticket of my life this weekend, got caught doing 73 in a 60 zone. It's a simple speeding ticket, no reckless driving or anything like that and the fine itself is pretty modest (under $80, although of course VA tacks on an extra $60 in "fees" 🙄 ). What I'm trying to figure out is if there's any way to mitigate the insurance rate hit. Going to court doesn't seem like an option since I got nailed in a jurisdiction that's several hours from where I live. Anyone familiar with the system in VA?

wtf? u got a tix for 73 in a 60?

in the 150k miles i've driven in Northern VA, i alway set cruiise control to 13mph over the speed limit w/o a problem. i've even passed cops sitting in speed traps going that speed, no problem.

and 60mph limit?! thats unusual. it's usually 55 or 65.
where did u get the tix?

That's pretty much the opposite of my experience and I've lived in VA for almost 13 years now. On 66 I can comfortably go 70 (in the 55 MPH area) and not worry about a ticket. Maryland and North Carolina on the other hand...

I've always thought Maryland cops are pretty tolerant. A lot of it comes down to whether you're in a rural area or not. In the city speed traps are almost unheard of, too much other crap to deal with. Out in the boonies you have counties that just use their sheriff's departments as revenue earners by nailing as many drivers as possible.

shut the f-word up.

listen noob, either contribute positively or stay off the internet.

heh. i've been to VA and have heard of all of the stories beforehand (exorbitant fines, speed traps, cops with attitudes, etc). i believe it.

Pretty much my experience here as well and I have lived here my entire life. I do know they are a bit stricter on 81 and parts of 95 because of the heavy traffic and the special enforcement zones they came up with after a couple of really nasty accidents.

Where in VA do you live? In NOVA it's not uncommon to be doing 15 over with no worry. I stick with 10 just to be on the safe side on the interstates.

I'm talking about VA here, not NOVA, which might as well be part of D.C. NOVA is completely different from the rest of VA. You have to get past Fredricksburg before you are officially in "The South".

Ah, ok that explains it. Cops are too busy up here to worry about speeders, maybe because the odds are good enough that they'll catch some a.hole doing 25 over since it's so populated (and don't have to worry about getting 2 or 3 regular speeders).

I agree, so shut the F up if YOU aren't going to do anything but troll. And just because one doesn't have 10 billion posts doesn't make them a newb. Check the join date NEWB.

Insurance hit? I've racked up many speeding tickets over the last few years and my rates have increased by $0.00.

Re: points & interstate reporting, this will go on my Maryland driving record. Because of how Maryland implements the Driver's License Compact I won't get any points on my license though.

I don't have to have points on my license for the insurance company to jack up my rate, but the question is how much will a single minor ticket affect my insurance rates? A couple of people have said they'll go up maybe $50 or $60 per year for the next couple of years. If that's the case then getting a lawyer or going through traffic school isn't worth it.

It depends on Maryland's laws (which used to be draconian but have since been relaxed some) but the national insurers I have worked for usually don't surcharge for a single moving violation, though you may still see a rate increase as it can cause you to lose any good-driving discount(s) you may have.

Traffic tickets seem to be big business in the East. Thank God the courts are more civilized in the West. One of the court clerks jobs in the West is to REDUCE the number of traffic cases coming across the judges desk and will reduce fines and inform you of classes you can take as well IF, you plead nolo contendere.

I dunno, I been in a couple bars here in Manassas and seen white folks gasp when a black dude walks in.
Thats pretty "The South" to me.
