I have a potted key lime tree that I have had since 1990 growing here in Northern Virginia. It grew so well over the summer that there are enough limes on it for a Key Lime pie or 2.

Northern Virginia grown key limes

There are more limes on it that I hope to be able to pick later on but it might be dicey as I am going to have to move them inside the garage for the winter tomorrow as there is a threat of frost here tomorrow evening.

The pie.
My wife couldn't resist adding food color which is why it is greener than it should be. I was surprised that it only took 11 of the limes to make it.

She promised not to do that to the next one so it will be the right color. The pie was still hot when I took the pic so no whipped cream on it yet.

I bought the tree in Marathon Key and have been doing nothing more that moving it to progressively larger pots. I am going to have to prune it back this spring and cut some of the roots as well when I repot it. It is either that or put it in one of those half whiskey barrel planters with some rollers on it. The tree was actually infested with scale bugs for a few years when I first brought it up from Florida and it almost died. I also have a Meyer lemon tree that has been producing lemons for the past 4-5 years now.

I keep them outside in direct sunlight starting about the end of April until about this time each year and just water them and feed them Miracle Gro and MirAcid. In the winter they move into the garage where they basically go dormant over winter. Sometimes they drop a lot of leaves but they always seem to come back fine each spring.

I think it was around 2.5 to 3 feet tall when I bought it. I was on a business trip on Marathon and another guy that was working on the project had driven down in his van so I had him bring it back for me. It turned out to have a fairly serious scale insect and mealybug problem that took me a few years to completely clear up. It almost killed the tree but since then it has been pretty healthy.
