Virginia gun owners don't need a CCW

I thought this was interesting. I haven't found confirmation yet, but apparently in my (fantastic) state of Virginia, it is true that you need a permit to carry a concealed weapon. But there is no law prohibiting you from carrying around a non-concealed weapon. I can go to the grocery store with a 6 shooter on my hips! This is awesome.

Actually I wouldn't bother with the hassle, even if it is legal. But I just think that it's awesome if it is true.

same in Texas.

also, i guess business can state that you can't go in with a gun.
i know a guy who got kick out of the mall and banned because he had a 2-handed sword with him.

no. not the same in texas.

Texas Administrative Code. Title 37, Part 1, §6.42: "A license holder carrying a handgun must keep the handgun concealed. This restriction does not apply if the license holder displays the handgun under circumstances in which the actor would have been justified in the use of deadly force under Texas Penal Code, Chapter 9. Violation is a Class A misdemeanor under Texas Penal Code, §46.035."

I always joked that you shouldn't need a CCW if you openly carry a gun, but I always said it tongue in cheek.

also just because theres no law directly preventing it dosen't mean you can do it. here in mass. theres no law directly preventing it but you can still be charged with brandishing.

Open carry is legal in many states, but illegal in many municipalities.

Doesn't matter either way to me, IMO you have to have a HUGE chip on your shoulder to open carry. Plus you have to deal with all the idiots calling the cops.

Concealed carry is where it's at.

How are they going to call the cops when they're dead?

That law only applies to those with a concealed handgun license. As far as carrying a visible weapon on you, I would highly recommend against it in Texas.. lots of police and concealed owners looking for operational experience.

Yup.

This is actually rather retarded, but if you're unlicensed you can open carry but if you're licensed it's brandishing if anybody sees your weapon.

Rather asinine if you ask me, but that's the way it works.

isn't brandishing like having it out of the holster and waving it around type of thing?

True.

I was in a McDonalds once in Indiana when some redneck walked in with a pistol on his hip. Everyone stared at him - I could see the worried look on some moms with kids. In my opinion, it would be assinine to do this - it serves no purpose - makes you look like a fool, and it can also lead to trouble in the wrong environment.

Open carry is legal in Arizona also. But there are numerous places that you can't bring a firearm into. And if the proprietor asks you to leave, you must do so immediately.

Virginia law is that local gov'ts can't enact gun laws stricter than the state. One more reason VA is awesome. 🙂

I'm not sure on this, but open carry sure is. I've heard talk about concealed guns around here, and we have some laws, but VT has very loose or no gun laws. I can sell you a gun like I can sell you a taco. You can walk down main street with your assault rifle in the open legally.

In fact, in my village, a guy has been shooting out his back windows like once a day, rather frequently. It's into the woods near a river. The town was going to meet to outlaw firing within town limits to shut him up, but not enough people showed for quorum.
