virgin mobile?

i got chinese money today and was wondering if any cell phone was worth getter with $40? i've heard about virgin mobile being a pretty good service because of their no contract deally. i personally will only use the phone in emergencies and to get rides.

One of my girls has it. We have had no problems contacting her when needed.

It's not a bad deal for a pre-pay service IMO. The quality of wireless service will be exactly as good or bad as SprintPCS is where you are, since they run on the SPCS network exclusively (no roaming is available).

I think the rate is not that good for a min $0.25 for the first ten minute and then $0.10 thereafter in the day.

however, for a emergengy or seldom-use phone, it is actually pretty good since you only need to top up $20 for 90 days.

It's pretty competitive among the pre-paid services.

No roaming with Virgin prepaid service? At all?

I notice they make no mention of roaming on their site - nothing about whether you can or can't, or anything about roaming charges.

Kranky,

I've read somewhere on their site, and I'm paraphrasing here, if you leave the Virgin Mobile service area, the phone will not work.

That's not to say you can't use the phone in different cities or states, but you can't use the phone on networks other than Virgin Mobile. (Technically, it's Sprint PCS' networks; Virgin Mobile is actually a Sprint PCS reseller.)

So, geographical roaming is possible, but inter-carrier roaming is not.

Thanks for the clarification. I will assume it would work anywhere that Sprint has coverage.

The fact that the site doesn't mention roaming charges still worries me. I would have thought if there were no roaming charges (i.e. call from anywhere) they would make a big deal of telling you that.

Yeah. I was actually just looking, and they don't even mention that it will work outside your home city (technically known as a SID, or system ID). Now I'm not even sure about that. Ugh! It's very ambiguous.

I'm very sure it says "No roaming charges" though, and that it will not work on networks other than Sprint PCS.

wait a second, so are virgin mobile phones only usable within your certain calling region (i.e. mine will the be the greater chicagoland area i'm guess)?

I checked their site. It does not say you can roam. It doesn't say you can't either. But there is no mention of roaming charges either way.

I figure that if you could use it nationwide with no roaming charges, they would be sure to tell you that. So I conclude you can't use it outside your home area.

I'm no longer looking at Virgin mobile (checking into e-CallPlus, which makes very clear you can use it anywhere with no roaming charges) so I'm not going to call them and confirm.

I have the Party Animal phone from them (free after reabte on Amazon, then).

I have traveled west to Utah and north to Upstate New York and Canada. I live in North Carolina. I've always been billed at the usual rate of .25/.10. No extra charges. The only place it went dead (no signal) was on the West Virginia Turnpike. And only for a stretch of 10 miles.

I am very happy with this phone.

cheers.

I have virgin mobile and it's pretty decent. The service is alright and the no contract thing is good, especially if you don't plan on using a lot of minutes. I'd recommend it if you're looking for a cheap cell phone solution and aren't going to use a lot of minutes.

OK, thanks you've answered my question.

Geographical roaming is possible anywhere Sprint PCS service is available, but inter-carrier roaming (where other cell service might exist, but Sprint service doesn't) is not possible.

Got it?
