Dumb n00b question: I just bought the VM K9 phone from BB for $39 last week. If I buy the two $30 cards, can I activate one now and then wait just before the 90 days expire on it and then activate the 2nd card for the following 90 days?

I also heard that the "spend $60 before May to keep activation for a year" is only good for those who received the email and activated before December 9th - don't know if it's true or not. People said that VM pulled the liberal interpretation of who could qualify for this killer $60 promo..

AFAIK, you should be able to activate one card now, and then wait 90ish days to activate the other card. As long as the top up card hasn't expired, that approach should work.

The e-mail I got said the $60 for a year was valid until May 2005:

"As we are always trying to make life easier for you, Virgin Mobile would like to announce Annual Guarantee. If you add at least $60 to your account by 5/31/05, Virgin Mobile will extend your service for a full year - that's 365 days. The day you reach $60, your account will remain active and you'll keep your phone number for a whole year after that. That means you don't need to Top-Up every 90 days like everyone else."

I've had Virgin Mobile for a year though, so I don't know if the promo works for new VM activations.

If you haven't activated it yet -- It does already come with $10 free when you activate, so you could wait 90 days from _that_ date before you use your first card (assuming you don't run out of the $10 credit). If you activate "on-line" -- there is (or was) a coupon-code you could enter that would bump it another $5. (I think the code is "SAVE05"... but not 100% sure)

The short answer to your question is: yes *

Also, a little fyi that I couldn't find anywhere (but maybe I just overlooked it) is you can receive text-messages via email (I think it's "subject" line only) -- your email address is: _phone_no_w/area-code_@vmobl.com (no, not literally )

edit: If you register with a valid email address, they'll send you a reminder on what the exact day your time expires (I think they might also text-message you, or call you with an automated message if your phone is on... can't remember).
Also, if you wait longer than 90 days to add, it doesn't push the _next_ refill date out -- you're refill dates are: initial-date, initial-date + 90, initial-date + 180, initial-date + 270, etc.... NOT: initial-date + 90, refill-date1 + 90, refill-date2 + 90, etc. (I mention that because you CAN be late by a fair number of days before you lose your number... you'll just not be able to use it, but the phone will maintain any balance for a while (I forget the # of days))

Thanks OP for the original deal and all the other responders that clarified the plan - definitely gives me an idea of what to do now: I will buy the two cards for $50 and just wait to activate the 2nd one near the 1st card's 90 day expiry.

I only intended to use the phone in emergencies, but who knows, I may start using it more often. Sprint service is OK in my area I've heard, but there are some dead spots. I hope that the Nextel deal will give some better coverage later on - although it probably won't affect the VM phones?

If you're a lite-user like me, they have $20 top-up cards. A few months ago, they had 2-for-$30 ($15 each for $20 cards) -- so I bought several.

That was the best deal...hopefully, they'll do that again in the future.

Target advertises it as 2 for $xx, but you can actually just buy 1 for half the advertised price.
So, for the current promo, you can buy one $30 top-up card for $25.
