Found a guy on cl selling an 04 rt10 for 39k. Question is how impractical are they? I don't need it for a dd but would only be used as a weekend cruiser. Anyone have one? Impressions? Opinions? Tossing the srt10 and a c6 very around as a new toy.

The Viper is pretty spartan on features and probably not recommended for anything but a weekend or track car for a skilled driver. There are not any safety features to correct stupid mistakes and repairing a wrecked one is expensive.

For 39k you can get a low mileage '06 Z06 or newer. The Z06 would have a lot of hatch space, lot more comfort feature like HUD, traction control, ABS, stability control, NAV and so on.

I would go with an original Viper myself. In short they are rough riding, loud, non-ergonmic, and an oven inside. But they look cool as hell and have one hell of a motor. As mentioned body repairs are very expensive. The front end/hood combo is around $10k. If it's just something for playing with on the weekend I would take one over a Vett just for something different you don't see everyday.

Vette IMO would work way better. Rides better, more comforts, etc...

The Corvette is a sports car for the street. The Viper is a track car thats street legal.

But drive both and see. Viper is more rare so if getting people to look at you is more importanant then go there. If driving in more comfort is better then go Corvette. Both will be faster then you can legally go so thats not much a issue. :) Hell I have to watch myself when I drive my 01 C5.

When you see someone in a viper or nice car do you automatically assume they just want people to look at them? I don't understand this attitude..

When I see a really nice car out on the street I appreciate being able to see it... IMO it's really cool to see a SRT10 or 458 etc etc out on the road rather than in a garage.

Ahh the viper is known to ride like shit, have horrible noise in the cabin, not be very comfortable, not very reliable, etc… its why a lot of high end cars like it have very low miles. They are great to look at but crap to drive on the street. Its about drawing attention. People don’t buy a Ferrari for gas mileage or reliability. They buy it for the wow look at me and my car factor.

Dude it's a Viper. If you have the means, jump on it. Imagine your regret when you are driving your Corvette and see a Viper on the road and think "I could have bought one of those."

I guess it really depends on what you define as a "weeend cruiser". Do you plan to track this car or go out and enjoy some twisties on a nice day. If you are the former, this car is for you; if the latter, a corvette or roadster is more up your alley. I have driven in the first-gen Viper and its a "balls to the wall" sportscar. Very fun and unforgiving, but not something I would ride in for a long time and enjoy it. I would only get a Viper if I had a more comfortable cruiser as well to enjoy on a weekend when I just want to cruise...

:p

It doesn't prove your point at all! Your comment definitely had a negative connotation about how buying a viper is important to "get people to look at you" vs a vette...

The poster you quoted was talking about what the 'driver' would rather have... Very different.

Look again, he was talking about the driver of the Vette. Look you see a Viper and... :sneaky:

Again for the track a Viper would be better vs a standard Corvette Coupe. But for the street I would take a Vette any day of the week to drive. But I would take a Viper if I was going for the "make people see me and the car and say I wish..."

Personally.. I'd never ever buy a viper. But I rolled by an srt10 on the hwy a week or so ago and gave the guy a thumbs up. I don't avoid eye contact or whatever because "he just drives it for attention"... I appreciate that he's out and about so I can admire the car.

I guess I look at it more like art? I dunno.. It's definitely not just you, a lot of people shun others who have nice things

poke poke poke :)

The Viper is much more hardcore "racecar" than Vettes for sure, especially a C6. Make sure you check one out as they can be a bit awkward to sit in, particularly with the pedal placement. Also understand the thing delivers gobs of torque pretty much off idle - careful on powering out of a turn so you don't wrap it around a tree/lightpole.

You don't drive a Viper, you strap yourself in and feel the G's!
The Vette you'd drive to church or get groceries. You could take it to your parents house and let your mom take it for a spin. The Viper you'd drive if you want to make children and adults cry in pain as you drive by and leave vulgarly long strips of rubber where ever you want.
Its not image, its about wanting to drive something brutally awesome while you still have the motor skills to control it. That's the real reason why people sell low mileage ones, the novelty wears off after a little while, understandable.

The back seats are the safest place for children. I don't know you personally OP so I can't tell if you're going to love the raw visceral feel of the Viper or hate it. Take a drive and find out.

Just to rile ya up, there's a local guy (to me anyway) with a ridiculous 96 Viper GTS that's street driven. The thing is a beast, I've seen him out and about with it at several different places during the summer.

Like I mentioned earlier, a C6 Z06 can be had for less with low miles and will be faster at the track than an '04 Viper and much better on the roads.
