Those clever people at Nichia have managed to make some rather nice violet laser diodes.
10 mW CW at 405.5 nm - not bad at all.
Just think how much data you could cram onto an optical disc if you used one of these bad boys to read/record - at 405 nm, the wavelength of these is about 40% smaller than the 690 nm diodes in DVD players.
