Violet laser diodes spotted

Those clever people at Nichia have managed to make some rather nice violet laser diodes.

10 mW CW at 405.5 nm - not bad at all.

Just think how much data you could cram onto an optical disc if you used one of these bad boys to read/record - at 405 nm, the wavelength of these is about 40% smaller than the 690 nm diodes in DVD players.

I don't remember.. I'll take a look to find out though..
 
Well, it is nowhere near production. Blue lasers still cost in the neighborhood of $2000, and aren't expected to find their way into consumer level equipment for the next few years. And if I remember correctly, the jump from blue to violet isn't as large as the jump from red to blue. Still is cool, though.

Yeah, that guy that developed blue does work for Nichia, don't remember his name though. Popular science did an article on him several months ago.

Scientific American did something on him after Popular Science did, and they mentioned he doesn't work there anymore.

as for them being extremely expensive, I don't know about that.

that's what they were working on, making it alot more economical to mass produce them. in fact the next standard for optical discs will be using them in a few years..
