"violence never solved anything"

So I work at a university. And my job occasionally requires me to walk around campus for one reason or another. I was on my way to check a user's network connection, when I noticed people out in the little cental area of campus that appeared to be handing out literature. Nothing really new, people pass their stuff out all the time. Except, when I get there, and they are selling their little newspaper. Unusual. The headline was something very similar to "US Marines happy over killing of Iraqi children" (but shorter).

The nearest woman selling them asked me if I wanted a copy for $1.
Me: *looks at it, decides to screw with her* "I have a cousin in the USMC, and according to him, Iraqi babies taste great when cooked medium rare. Who says making foreign policy with an M-16 doesnt work?"
Her: (after a moment) "violence never solved anything."
Me: *chuckles* "Good comeback."
Her: *looking pissed off*
Me: "Have you ever studied the Fourth Punic War?"
Her: *looks confused* "Never heard of it"
Me: "Thats right, because the Third Punic War solved that dispute"
Her: *more pissed off* "well..."
Me: "Do you know any black people that are currently slaves in the USA?"
Her: "No"
Me: "Do you speak German?"
Her: "No."
Me: "Do you speak Russian?"
Her: *looks flamingly pissed off* "No. What the fsck does my knowledge of languages have to do with this? Do you think you're smarter because you speak those languages?"
Me: "I dont speak Russian or German. Neither do you, because of the violence done by our fellow countrymen in WWII and through-out the Cold War. I guess violence does solve some things. Such as slavery, Nazism, and Communism. Maybe you should read a history book."
Her: *badly attempted slap*
Me: "I guess maybe you do think some things can be settled with violence. Another convert." *walks away whistling*

It would have been a little more satisfying had she known a)what the Punic Wars were and b)that the Third Punic War was the last one, just because she would have set herself up a little better. As it is I think it sailed right over her head (but I have this suspicion that a lot of things sail right over her head). But at least I think she knows the more recent references... but I'm not 100% sure of that.

PSA: ladies, when you attempt to slap a man, it is a lot more effective if you dont wind up like you are trying to grap something 3 feet directly behind you before bringing your hand forward. In the time she took to wind up for that slap I could have taken a leak (on her).

EDIT, also for the ladies: Something I just thought of... in general, if you are arguing with a guy who is much bigger than you, and the argument is about violence, and his argument is that violence DOES solve issues, you might be wise to not attempt to slap him or otherwise initiate violence. In this case I was amused, because my little 8 year old cousin slaps better than she does, both in technique and in power. Had she hit me in the nuts my reaction may have caused me to be sitting in a jail cell instead of at my computer ;)

If only I was wearing my Arrogant Bastard Ale T-shirt. Sadly, I only ordered it yesterday... it would have made this just a bit more fun.

Got love the fact that you pushed her to violence with a few well chosen words. So much for her deep commitment to non-violence.

That's the best part. :D

I must confess though, I am also not familiar with the Punic wars. I switched school districts about seven times in my childhood, and I swear I covered the civil war 3 years straight... of course I couldn't tell you anything about the civil war either...

Nice, my sister is slowly starting to become one of those people. Everytime she comes to me with some outragous article, I always make it a point to find at least three counter-articles that proove it wrong.

I dont mind her trying to find alternate sources of information, and in fact I encourage it. I do mind the fact that she doesnt check the integrity of these articles, or of the speakers she hears, she just accepts what they say as fact. And that just bugs me.

The Punic Wars were Carthage against Rome, with the time frame of (very roughly) 300-100 B.C., with roughly 100 years between the first and third war (I'm pretty rough on the dates, I know). The First Punic War Rome won, imposed sanctions, went home. The Second Punic War Hannibal took his elephants over the Alps, ran all around the Italian Penisula, and was eventually defeated and committed suicide (I think). The Third Punic War Rome decided they wanted to wipe out Carthage, made up some excuse, invaded, leveled the city, and sowed salt all around to prevent anything from ever growing there again. There was no Fourth Punic War, because there was no Carthage.

Much of the liberal propoganda is a self-perpetuating brainwashing combined with fantasy driven denial. One of the reasons that Hollywood is so liberal - the facts are all make believe, entertainment and the media can't be bothered with facts...

I meant to add my "lolocaust, OWNED" to this thread about three hours ago, but I forgot.

It was a funny story. :)

I won't disagree with your point, but it seems that your story was badly plagerized from Heinlein's Starship Troopers.

I don't beleive that for a second. That story's been told a hunderd times in a hundred different versions, and it was fake every one of those times, too.

I've read Starship Trooper's recently, which is probably what caused me to mention the Punic Wars. But I dont think he mentioned Communism, slavery, or Nazis in that book. Just because I used his line of reasoning doesnt mean I didnt have an argument with a hippie today.

or not. Unless you care to visit Ohio though, I really cant prove it to you, now can I?
The part about her failed slap attempt sealed the deal for me.

*sigh* Believe whatever you want, it happened. But since I cant prove it did, and you cant prove it didnt, I'm just going to let the thread die. The look on her face was priceless, though :D.
