So part of the tiles are lifting so I decided to remove the tiles and put hard wood floor over it. unfortunately its not the peel and stick types so its fully glued..

any fast way to rip this out ? took me 1 hour to remove 5 tiles 🙂 they break of when i scrap them off so i gotta do it multiple times each tile.

is there one of those portable one of these http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDkLP9hsVoQ ?

Get a heat gun, instead of a blow drier. More effective. Alternatively, there's a nozzle for blow torches that would work. But, indoors, I'd worry about fumes.

Note: the video you posted - it's over a concrete floor. It works so well because there's a tremendous amount of force pushing, compared to what you could do physically.

I have rented one of these to take up old vinyl on a concrete subfloor.

wow, like home depot or something ? what they go for ? 90 bucks a day ?

i found a space heater, so its coming up easier now.. glue is looser if i heat the spot for a 2-3 min.. might just elbow grease it

Depends on your idea of "portable".
Most rental stores have this:

They should also carry these:

But as suggested by above, Heat Gun & a 6" drywall tool will make it easier & cleaner.
Remember, whatever method you use, heat is your friend when it comes to removing VCT, the hotter the floor the better!
(I have replaced single tiles by heating the entire tile, then super heating the middle of the tile, punch through with a putty knife, & start lifting)

Heat gun will do it. If it's very old I'd get it tested for asbestos before doing any further work. Treat it like asbestos till you know it's not. If it's fairly new then don't worry.

Over plywood... nothing's going to make that very easy. Heat it up and scrape it off. No help for it. Not sure I would try a powered peeler over plywood.

The vinyl should be glued to 1/4" luan plywood which is really smooth stuff for attaching the vinyl to. The luan can be ripped up as well and there should be normal plywood underneath. However that will probably leave you with a ton of staples to pull up. Still easier than dealing with the glue.

Heat gun helps alot. The whole tile comes right up along with most of the mastic.
A rental place should have a large heater to do four or more tiles at a time and they should have a long handled scraper so you can do that standing up.

new thing ... internet search engines, bing, google, dogpile, and others ... search on "home improvement books".

They have pictures and everything.

It is probably on a layer of luan. Much easier to just take up the luan with the tiles still attached.

Might be, but so far the tiles i pull up, i dont see staples or screw, but the plywood / luan is on there.. its pretty smooth, ill have to look harder
