Vintage watch collecting - where to start?

I don't know much at all about watches but need a good hobby. I've always found mechanical watches fairly fascinating and love the look of watches circa 1950s/60s. If I plan to do collect for fun (pick up a watch for $50 at a pawn shop, grab stuff off of ebay, etc. not expecting any financial return on my investment), what are some brands to look for?

Here's an example of the look I like:

In other words, I don't care about bling/brand recognition, etc. I just love the lines and craftsmanship of pre-1980s gear.

Do you happen to have a "style" that you prefer? Aviators, military watches, classic design, divers, etc?

I'd say I'm pretty open - like aviators, classic, divers. Clean, not too many gizmos, leather strap - think Mad Men, but my budget's more Mr. Draper's assistant.

Reddit's Search is atrocious - good luck.

Not exactly a cheap hobby...

Well, I'm basically looking for the honda accords of the mid-20th century watch world (modern equivalents would be seiko, citizen, even timex - just don't know what brands were around back then that are worth looking into). I've seen watches from the 1950s that look great and still work with automatic movements from $20 to $200.

Omegas depreciate. I was looking at getting a vintage watch, but now I'm planning on getting another job and moving, so I'm waiting until after I move.

I'm interested in this thread. I'd like to pick up a moderately priced vintage watch every few years.

Wow, had no idea that an omega could be had for so (relatively speaking) cheap. I still might avoid it because I've always made fun of people who drive more than they can afford ("I wouldn't buy a BMW until I earned one") and think a name like omega might be pretentious considering my humble income and lifestyle, but I'd def. look into it!

So far I really like the design and pricing of vintage seikos. Handsome and minimalistic.
