Does anyone have the Viewsonic VX 910 19" LCD monitor?

It is on sale at CompUSA this week (also was last week) for $499.99 - $100 mail in rebate. But every single CompUSA in Illinois (I live near Chicago) is out of stock! Same story with Office Max and Office Depot. Office Max lists 2/3/05 as estimated availability. Office Max does not even have a floor model that I could go check out.

So does anyone have this? I definitely wanna look at it in person before buying, but all signs point to it being a good display (at a budget anyway -- I can't really pay $700 for the real high-end monitors).

I found a few online sites via Pricewatch that have it, and the lowest priced one is here, for only $399 + $29 shipping = $428.. That's actually lower than the CompUSA price since with tax it would come to $438.74.

P.S. A few places like Best Buy, Circuit City are featuring the Samsung SyncMaster 912N for $379 (after MIR) this week, but it does not have a DVI input, so should I completely rule it out? It lists a 800 : 1 contrast ratio, and reviews on bestbuy.com are very good, but I'm wondering about anyone's opinion here. I really need a new monitor for my new system (all components arrived today!)

Other 19" LCD monitor suggestions? I'll hear those too, thanks. :)

I have pretty bad vision, so I need things bigger when possible. Now, I'm not sure if I would want to run at 1280x1024 native resolution when I'm programming, typing in Word, browsing AT, etc, because the text may look too small for me. I might bring it down to 1024x768 or something. I know that people complain about messed-up quality at non-native resolution, but I don't need my text to be "beautiful", I need it to be readable.

For gaming, I'm sure I'd enjoy a 1280x1024 experience :)

I returned my VX910, even though it's only $370 with a free gift. The first moment a received it I thought it's a great monitor, no dead pixels, very little backlight problem (a little bit at the top but that's it), no ghosting. But then I after a few consecutive hours of reading text I started to have headaches. I found that the light coming out of the screen is not even, some parts stronger and some parts weaker, which problem is the reason for the headache. I turned the brightness to minimum and contrast to around 40 and felt better but then the color just doesn't look good at that brightness/contrast.

Also even after I did all the cleartype, 60hz, auto adjust, native resolution, etc, the text is still a bit blurry. Ok I admit it's still better than the samsung 912n in OD but still not good enough for long reading.

My conclusion is that this monitor has good value but only if you don't spend hours reading text with it. It's good for gaming since there's no ghosting but I won't recommend it if you use the monitor primary for reading text.

I would spend a lot of time with text, probably more time than gaming. I certainly don't want headaches... Also, when you say, "Ok I admit it's still better than the samsung 912n in OD...", sorry, but what do you mean by OD? I'm kinda tired right now, and it's probably something simple, but I'm not getting it... heh

Also, did you end up choosing another monitor that you DO like? I need a good one!

Sorry, OD means office depot, I went there to compare the VX910 with the 912n.

As for my choice, I ordered a 1704fpv instead, not shipped yet, you may wonder why I changed to a 17", that's because I figured maybe with 0.264 mm pixel pitch instead of 0.297mm of a 19" the text could be clearer. As for why 1704fpv, well I'm not using the monitor for gaming so 25ms response time is not too big a concern but then I hope the 1000:1 contrast ratio would really help me reading text.

Hope that helps.

I'm not sure how I overlooked this monitor up to this point, but I'm now leaning towards ordering this here LCD:

SAMSUNG 910T-Silver 19" LCD Monitor -RETAIL -- $445 - $30MIR = $415 + free S/H (in stock as of 1/19/05 11:38PM)
http://www.newegg.com/app/View...tion=24-001-161&depa=1

The reviews on Newegg for that (silver) and the black version are overwhelmingly positive, and it looks like it has the best pivot options for adjusting the monitor position. And only $415 beats the $428 lowest price I found for the Viewsonic. And since originally posting, I read several negative reviews of the Viewsonic which make me question it. This Samsung, OTOH, seems to be adored universally (and AT rates Samsung very high in its review... not this exact model, but I'm going to give the benefit for this too).

Any comments?

910T is pretty good I also heard, but don't trust reviews on newegg, they delete negative ones. Oh and amazon is selling this for only $399.

Remember it's also 25ms response time though.

Not totally relevant, but I picked up the Samsung 712, which is the analog only 17" panel that is a relative of the 910 you're looking at. I'm not really all that impressed with this display- it's not that great for text (my 19" CRT Mits Diamond Pro was much better), but no ghosting with video. I would not buy it again- I think I'll take a very close look at displays before I make the same mistake twice.
