Viewsonic VP201b, Dell 2001FP or Dell 2005 FPW?

I'm about to get a new monitor.

It's got to be an LCD, show at least 1600x1200 pixels and should be useful for games, ie. max 16ms response time.

I currently own a Dell laptop, with a 1680x1050 widescreen, and i like this display very much, and don't want any lower resolution for my desktop PC.

i've been looking at 3 diferent models:

Dell Ultrasharp 2005FPW, costs 5700 kr in DK (997.57 USD)
http://dellware.euro.dell.com/...DK5194&b=DDK_200-28481
20" widescreen, 1680x1050, 300cd/m2, 600:1 contrast and 12(16)ms response time
(dell US says 12ms, DK says 16ms), plus Svideo and composit in

Dell Ultrasharp 2001FP 20 til ca. 5300 kr in DK (927.56 USD)
http://dellware.euro.dell.com/...DK5194&b=DDK_200-23359
20" 1600x1200, 250cd/m2, 400:1 contrast og 16ms response time plus Svideo and
composit in

Viewsonic VP201b costs 6300 kr in DK (1102.57)
http://www.viewsonic.com/produ...lays/proseries/vp201b/
20" 1600x1200, 250cd/m2, 400:1 contrast og 16ms response time
as far as i understand, this display has the same panel as the Dell 2001FP

The 3 displays has in common that the panel can be turned 90 degrees, 4 port USB hub and the DVI and VGA inputs.

One of my considerations, is whether i'll be happy with the widescreen model, because it's display area is 7% smaller, and it's got 9% less pixels than the 1600x1200 ones.

Is it worth giving up a few pecent of pixels and display area, just to get a widescreen?
And are the any benefits of buying the Viewsonic, which is a little more expensive?

I've tried cutting out 2 pices of paper, in the dimensions that equals the display area of 2005FPW and Viewsonic VP201b, and then stick it to my current monitor. My impression is that the widescreen doesn't look as big as the other ones.
But, the widescreen has much better specifications (cd/m2, contrast, response time), so what do you think?

I use my computer for development, web-design, graphics, just surfin', playing, and other funny stuff.
I can never have enough space, and if the widescreen was in 1920x1200, the choice was easy!
If you have another suggtestion for a Display that could fit my requirements at a similiar price, you should tell me :)

Welcome to the forums. :)

For what it's worth, I've used both the 2001FP and the 2005FPW. The Viewsonic one is (as far as I'm aware) basically the same monitor as the 2001FP, so I wouldn't bother considering it since it's more expensive.

I absolutely love my 2005FPW; widescreen is great, and I don't find it to be small at all. Plus I've found that it doesn't seem to ghost as badly as the 2001FP - the ghosting is still there, but I've decided it's not so bad that I can't live with it. It's definitely brighter than the 2001FP I was using as well. Just a great monitor all around. If you have any more specific questions, feel free to ask.

Hi sbn

I have been though the exact same monitors looking for my next lcd.
I ended up ording the 2005FPW from dell, on the same januar offer you are quoting. :)
That was yesterday, so I cant tell you if im happy just yet, but I have high expectations :p

Remember the offer ends tomorrow. :p

I choose the 2005 for primarly 2 things
1: The wide screen will be much more usefull doing programming and other office stuff, which I do a lot of, also most games support widescreen today.
2: Energy, the 2005 have a quotet typical use of 55Watt/Max 75, while the 2001 have a 90Watt(use?)

Also the better specifications of the 2005 sure is a push in that direction.

I looked a lot on the Viewsonic also, and what I could find didnt sugest that it had the same huge energy requirements like the 2001
Otherwise they should be identical.

A good place to look for further info is www.prad.de
Its german :(, but they have a lot of info about lcd monitors.

synth:

thanks... i think that the reason why you see less ghosting on the 2005 can be that it's a bit faster (but dell in DK still says 16ms)

soni:

what january offer? i guess it should be on the DK website, since youre from DK... ?!?
i just se the ordinary list of prices

Hi

Just got my 2001fp last night to replace my NECFE991SB (my sons monitor went bad, so I upgraded and he got y 6 month old crt) and I love it.

IMHO it looks better than the NEC in any games that Ive played so far. Also I dont see any of this "ghosting" that folks claim to see. I dunno, looks simply awesome.

So far the games IVe player are HL2, counterstrike source, WOW and COD. Played a dvd to see how it look, very nice.

Oh and I dont notice this monitor being dark either, I was expecting to have mess witht the gamma in my nvidia drivers, but no need for me at least.

And if ya get one of the Dells, they have a nice 30 day return policy if ya decide you dont care for it.

Well Good lucks on your decision

I love my 2001FP, its great for games , movies and everything else, zero ghosting whatsover on mine.

Its definately my favorite current piece of hardware and the only one that I have no desire whatsoever to upgrade.

BTW I used a 21" Sony G520P CRT monitor for several years before getting the 2001FP, it look about a week to get used to the 2001FP but after I did I knew there was no going back to a CRT...the LCD is so much easier on the eyes in several ways.
