Even if it?s 120 Hz it's still only a low resolution 1680x1050 so it's useless.

They really should be investing new technology into the 30" panels as target customers are more likely to demand (and pay for) such technologies.

I?d love to game at 2560x1600 on 30? but every such device I?ve seen has at least one serious limitation, with some having several. The Dell panels in particular are shocking, especially the 3008.

I had great hopes for the NEC 30" after rave reviews with regards to scaling, colors and lack of ghosting but then I found it has an input lag of about two frames which is simply unacceptable.

marketing gimmick

i doubt it will be 'true' 120hz. it'll probably do what a couple others have tried in the past to mimic 120

Eh... Way to go with generalizing. I wouldn't want larger than 22", 24" tops LCD on my desktop. Too big is too big.

He did not say anything about physical size.. he said resolution

Why the hate? I'd hardly call it useless.

Yeah its useless because its not a 30 inch panel. What kind of retarded thinking is that? The greater majority of PC gamers use panels 22 inches and smaller. Just because its useless for you doesn't make it useless for the other 99% of the population that isn't looking to buy 30 inch panels.

if the screen is 120Hz frequency does it mean Vsync will hold it at 120FPS? and no chopping upto 120FPS? interesting if its true. i wonder how it is to game @ 120FPS smoothly...

Yeah, but since it's running (theoretically) at twice the refresh of most screens, I'd think any higher resolutions would be kind of pointless, since nothing but the best hardware could drive it over 120fps, even at 1680x1050.

I've got a 4870 and I game at 1360x768. With all the eye candy on I still see frame drops to mid-30's occasionally.

Anyway, if the screen really does offer true 120Hz, it might be the screen to finally replace my aging HDTV.

edit:
Moreover, when paired up with the GeForce Stereoscopic 3D technology, the ViewSonic 120Hz display will provide game enthusiasts with realistic depth, intense motion, rich graphics and detailed images that literally leap off the screen.

I highly doubt this is real 120hz, just the marketing 120hz we have seen everywhere else (in other words, 60hz in reality), especially since its other specs indicate that it's a fairly average TN.

There is actually one 120hz LCD out there, that stereoscopic 22" monitor that was discussed here a while ago. It requires two separate DVI connections to provide enough bandwidth though and is detected by the system as two monitors.

Of course it's useless. I was running 1600x1200 seven years ago on my 19" CRT which is still a higher resolution than this device.

Wait a second... are you saying that LCD actually runs at a native refresh rate of 120Hz -- the same as a CRT set at 120Hz? And that it can display a true framerate of 120FPS without tearing?

Or is that just two 60Hz signals interweaved on separate panels to create a 3d image when using the proper glasses? As I understand it, that kind of display still can not display an actual 120FPS. Its like two 60FPS frames rendering at once to look 3D with the glasses.

And Viewsonic specifically mentions that the display is compatible with the nvidia stereoscopic rendering, leading me to believe it is no different than the one on newegg.

Yeah, that one can't do 120fps in any reasonable way. You will get 60fps when you look at it through the stereo glasses. Without the glasses, it will in fact be 120fps but will probably just look weird since every other frame is shown slightly differently to get the 3D effect.

is this a joke? some of us have been waiting years for a 120hz lcd of any kind and you refer to it as 'useless'

you are a mod, you should know better :)

the ones you are talking about are HDTV's and they are almost always labeled as TV's and not monitors

it also says that it uses dual-link DVI... since when do 60hz 1680res lcd's use dual-link dvi?

everything i read points to this being the real deal

Just because you don't want it doesn't mean it is useless. Maybe Viewsonic thinks they can make more money off this model vs a 30 inch 120Hz model.

dual-link DVI doesn't have enough bandwidth for a 30 inch 120hz monitor

i'm sure thats the reason they went with 1680

ahh i see

the difference is those are single link DVI are they not?

you don't need the extra bandwidth of dual-link DVI if you are just gonna insert black frames

The LCDs in that BeHardware article seem to be doing something more interesting than just inserting black frames, but it still isn't anything that could be considered 100hz or 120hz except for marketing purposes.

I don't see anything about dual link DVI on the Viewsonic either. It just says dual DVI, which most likely means it supports two inputs like many other LCDs.

From the official press release

http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/080825/ny31251.html?.v=1

"Features, such as integrated 2Wx2 stereo speakers and Dual Link DVI digital input, combine to expand entertainment options and make the monitor the must-have display for 3D gaming."
