Looking for a high-end LCD for gaming? Then ViewSonic's new Xtreme series of LCDs may just be for you. ViewSonic's top-of-the-line Xtreme LCD is the VX924. The VX924 is a 19" 1280x1024 LCD with a 4ms response time, 270-nit brightness and 550:1 contrast ratio. Pricing wasn't announced, but the VX924 will begin shipping in May. Just below the VX924 is the VX724. ViewSonic hasn't released official specs or pricing, but it also boasts a 4ms response time and will ship in June.
In addition to the VX line, ViewSonic has also announced their new VP line of Xtreme LCDs. Three SKUs were announced, two 17" models (one black and one silver) and one 19" LCD. All three feature an 8ms response time.

at this response time, lcds will surpass crts in updating speed! pretty amazing milestone for "Gaming LCDs". now they need to focus on colors and viewing angle.

Wouldn't 4ms be overkill? If they try and charge an arm and a leg for it then no point in buying anything less then 8ms, I believe NEC is set to release a 4ms model as well.

Not going to happen. CRT's update an order of magnitude faster than LCD's. LCD's however are definitely smashing that "good enough" barrier for even fast paced FPS games. 4ms should be up to the task for any game, seeing as how 12ms (actual, not rated) is plenty for games.

Remember, 4ms displays don't operate at 250Hz; they're still running at 60 Hz like all LCD's (although some can be run at 70/72 Hz). It just means that there is no ghosting effect with sudden colour transitions.

well i think even 12ms rated is not bad at all for games. i have a 12ms. rated lcd.

what do you mean by crts update faster than 4ms. (actual) lcds? isn't refresh rate (60Hz) completely irrelevant in LCDs since there is nothing refreshing(scanning) (per se)?

I stopped caring about response time after 16ms. I want LCD manufacturers to improve the color and the contrast.

on 12ms for my 710T I can't see any blurring really....is 4 really necessary? Especially when it'll cost so much more. There's a reason they didn't annouce pricing.

What I mean is the actual response times (black to white, grey to grey, etc) are significantly faster in CRT's, which is why they don't have any ghosting issues whatsoever.

I agree that refresh rates look nicer/clearer on LCD's than CRT's since CRT's have to draw the image line by line (60 Hz = 60 entire screen redraws per second) whereas LCD's update the entire image simultaneously. CRT flicker up to 85 HZ or so is very noticeable to most people, whereas LCD should not flicker even at 60 Hz with a well shielded cable.

But LCD's will never catch CRT's in terms of response time, ie CRT's will always have an advantage in displaying a fluid fast-moving image with no blurring or ghosting of the previous image at all.

There has to be a catch. That's a 3-fold speedup compared to the previous "fast" LCDs. I wonder if the tradeoff is color reproduction?

Interesting article here that has some good information on how 4ms response times are being achieved. I can't vouch for the site, but they seem to have good information on monitors.

Sounds not too bad, but to be honest I doubt there weill be many people who will see the difference between 4 and 8ms let alone really need it.
