Need some advice from the ATOT Vietnamese population here.

So a friend of mine is getting married. What's the proper gift for me to give them? I'm friend with the groom (Viet) first but also with the bride now. From what I understand, the engagement is more for the parents, right?

TIA.

Generally speaking, money is the gift of choice for most asian engagements, weddings, etc. This is, by and large, NOT a stereotype, but the norm. Being asian, its what I see and what I participate in. If you do intend to give money (cash, new bills, nicely folded), put it in the red envelopes called le-cie (I know I did not spell that right).

I've never heard that the gift went more for the parents. This is Chinese tradition tho so maybe I have no basis for saying anything:p

Actually, the term "lai-tse" (which means "luck") is used for when the red envelopes are given on Chinese New Year. The general term is the direct translation of red envelope.

Hmmmm...I knew you give money for wedding, but I thought it's different for engagement? I did some research on the net and found that the parents give each other money/gifts for the engagement, but nothing was mentioned for the guests.

Yes, always get Congac. Asians love the stuff.

edible underwear? j/k...heheh.

If your friend isn't old skool vietnamese, a regular gift would do. I think it's parents or relatives who give the bride and groom a lai see (red envelope).

Money is generally a good idea. Asian cultures value cold hard cash than they do thought out gifts.
