"Yet the Republican attack machine follows a pattern we've seen before, whether the target is Senator John McCain in South Carolina in 2000 or Senator Max Cleland in Georgia in 2002"

I believe those who didn't serve, or didn't show up for service, should have the decency to respect those who did serve ? often under the most dangerous conditions, with bravery and, yes, with undeniable patriotism.

Wesley K. Clark, a former Democratic presidential candidate, was commander of NATO forces from 1997 to 2000.

Unbiased? 😕

Who in thier right mind would speak ill of a Kennedy clan insider at that point in history?

yup, by the standards used during attacks of kerry by conservatives, it is always ignored that their man cannot even compare. it takes a determined mind to hold such extreme double standards for behavior.

Like when Clinton wrote a piece saying 'any President who lies to the American people' [Nixon] should step down, then did the very same thing? Is this the type of double-standard that you speak of?

It would probably be in your best interest to shelve this argument until WMD's are located.

Kerrys camp calls Vietnam POW (who was also an ace "a chickenhawk.

Solitary service
Constituents from one end of Rep. Sam Johnson's district to the other contacted this column yesterday (not too surprising, considering the popular congressman captured 74 percent of the most recent vote.)
Former Georgia Sen. Max Cleland, we'd written yesterday, labeled six Republican lawmaker-veterans who are critical of prospective Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry "a bunch of chicken hawks who never went to war, never felt a wound, but are so quick to criticize a man who went to war and got wounded doing it."
We drew attention yesterday to the distinguished war record of one of those six congressmen ? Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham ? but overlooked the fact that Mr. Johnson, Texas Republican, served in the Air Force for 29 years, flew 62 combat missions in Korea, and survived two tours of duty in Vietnam. He earned more medals than we can possibly list here, including two Purple Hearts. But most noteworthy, he was a prisoner of war in Vietnam.
Last week, the 73-year-old Mr. Johnson inserted into the Congressional Record: "On this date in 1971, John Kerry stated that America violated the Geneva Conventions in Vietnam. Mr. Speaker, when Mr. Kerry made these remarks, I just emerged from nearly four years of solitary confinement in Vietnam. Trust me when I say the Vietnamese regularly violated the Geneva Conventions, not the other way around."

Why? The French asserted that he had WMD; the U.N. did; President Bill Clinton did; Senator Hanoi John did in 1992 and 1996 and later. I got a letter from the Sec. of Defense in 1990-something that said my unit was hit with 'low-level chemical/biological weapons'...everyone arrived at the same conclusions. You should really think about who fooled who and who is lying to themselves.

Sure, but the difference being that France, the U.N. and the USA under Clinton didn't start a war based on this fact.

That's the crux of the problem...Africa, Saudi, NY, Qatar...8 years of do-nothing, feel-good policy cost us 3,000+ innocent lives. Perhaps if your list of countries/people had actually done something (aside from shoving cigars up interns), we wouldn't have had to fire up the dogs of war now.

had Clinton tried to act on this i guarantee you republicans wouldve accused him of trying to deflect attention away from his infedility scandal. oh wait, they did that anyways, when he sent troops to Kosovo and lobbed cruise missles at Sudan and Afghanistan.

Bringing in Kosovo strikes at the heart of your argument; Clinton violated the 1972 War Powers Act and didn't seek permission from Congress for Kosovo. Therefore, why would he feel an obligation to get permission to protect America after the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd direct attack against OUR interests? Moreover, where was the liberal left when he didn't seek a permission slip from the U.N. for Bosnia? Thanks for playing, though.

did the republicans not accuse him of diversionary tactics?
yes or no.
i know im just a 25 year old punk, with 120 credit hours of college, no @ss to hold up my baggy pants, but i distinctly remember that.
in fact, if you search in google, clinton diversionary tactics. you will find some sites detailing what i said.

and one of them happens to be your favorite whipping boy.

the communist news network.

That's unfair! Galt is an economist. They only read NUMBERS! (Of course, the record is devoid of any evidence that they understand numbers, but we'll give our friend the benefit of the doubt, no?)

Every single individual who has gone up before the 9/11 commission, whether the Clinton administration or Bush administration, has said that any large scale actions before 9/11 would not have been permitted by the American public, and would have been political suicide. It doesn't take a genius to think for a sec how the American public would have reacted if Clinton said he wanted to invade Afghanistan to take out Bin Laden.
