When I played the game I posted in another forum my impressions. Here is the same post i did at the time.
"Note: This is not a review. This is just my impression of a game that I am still playing.
The game is Vietcong and for me (and many people) it's the first game that I play themed after the Vietnam war.
Once in a while (unfortunately not that often), out of nowhere, a game comes along and surprises the sh!t out of me. The last titles that did this to me were Undying and Medal of Honor:AA. Both this games came out without me having heard anything from them and after playing them you just got that smile on your face that represents the happiness of being a computer game freak not being sorry for spending timeless hours in front of a computer screen. A truly gratifying experience.
Many people state that a computer game is all about the gameplay. That is true. Specially in the old days when graphics and sound were not that good (compared with today's standards) but today with the high expectations derived from high system specifications and new technologies players require more than just that. What is expected is a good mix of all the elements of a game like sound, visuals, story, AI and of course gameplay. Actually, for me, it's the mix of all those things that make the actual gameplay experience.
Graphically speaking Vietcong isn't groundbreaking. But the way they did the foliage (and I believe there is alot of that in the Vietnam jungles) is really amazing and the performance hit isn't there. Most of the foliage moves when enemies and friendlies pass through them, there are birds and animals in those jungles. Everything is very polished in that department. One thing I didn't like was the character faces. I guess I was spoiled after Mafia. But all the characters seem like they had a terrible flaming accident and got disfigured for life. But since that only happens in cutscenes (you normally won't look at the players faces when being shot by 5 VC's in the middle of a jungle).
In the sound department is where the developers really surprised me. I have to say that Vietcong has some of the best sound effects for a FPS game. From the birds and animals in the jungle, radio transmissions, sound buzz when a bomb or grenade goes off near you, the EAX effects done in the VC tunnels (this ones really impressed me) everything in sound is really polished. Music on the other hand isn't that used in the game. only in the beginning and end of missions and in the bunker where you can read mission briefings or mission reports. It's all very 60's and 70's style.
AI is also well done. Specially enemy AI where VC's will always try and search for cover if fired upon. Friendly AI is also good but I noticed a problem with path finding when sometimes you have to call our members to you because they are stuck somewhere and can't come on their own. I even had to do a load because I got stuck in a bunker with the friendlies blocking the way out. Other than that the also try and cover when fired upon and sometimes they even try and flank the opposition.
Gameplay and story is also very well done. The missions are varied from defending the camp to pursuing VC's in their tunnels (which, by the way gave me the feeling of being afraid of dark and closed spaces) to surviving your way through the jungle after a helicopter crash, to attacking a hill. You can even try and save a team mate that has been captured in a small VC village or call for air strikes using you map and radioman. You got to love the smell of napalm.
Ok, by now (if you have read this far) you can tell that I am really enjoying this game. If you have the money to buy this game and have some time off to play some games, I recommend you buy this one. "
