I can't find any, i watched it live and i thought that the reason he won was because he was the first to palm the wall. But come to find out its not first palm its first touch... i thought for sure he touched second...

I cannot find any pictures of the exact time phelps touched or any video replays. He prob won but from what i read it was by 2 100,000s of a second not the 1/100 that is/was recorded.

i think its a switch at the end. its not touch sensitive, you have to actually push it in when you approach

sucks for serbians.

They just showed on NBC the super super slo-mo video from the cameras at the bottom of the pool showing Phelps touch the pad first. Great pics!

i noticed that. a lot of people representing other countries are actually what we would normally consider as americans.

Phelps by a finger nail.

i dont see any picture where Phelps is touching and the other guy is not. Picture 5 shows both of them touching.

I would love to see the slow mo video but my NBC didnt play it.

I want Phelps to have all the medals but think that match was a tie or worse. 2/100,000 of a sec difference is a tie. If not then what difference is a tie? 1/100,000? 1/1000000000000?

Fifth Shot shows Phelps touching the pad first

And the Sixth Shot is a blow-up of the Fifth Shot showing that Cavic didn't touch the pad

i don't know, the olympic officials allowed the serbs to send a representative to go and watch the slo mo that the decision was based on, and the serbs agreed that phelps won it. call it a conspiracy if you want, but me, i believe that phelps won it. it has been commented that, cavic could have won it if he had not raised his head and looked at the bad. that probably cost him the 1/100th of a second.

Good thing it doesn't matter what you "think" when there are electronics and pictures that prove otherwise.

Ah, that's because you have to actually look at all the photos. (Picture 6, big guy).

Who said 2/100,000? That definitely wouldn't have been from a video replay, because the cameras don't record 50k frames per second. I don't know if they record the times to that level of accuracy... it would surprise me if they did. Why use equipment that is capable of that precision when you only record times to the nearest 100th of a second?

I don't think the time interval is relevant, it's the time on the clock that matters. If you're 0.00000000002 second apart but the clock ticked .01 in that time, you lose. If you're .009 apart but the clock didn't change, you tie - even if it can be conclusively shown that one person touched the wall first.

and its 100th of a second. not 100,000 jesus, that level of difference wouldn't be worth bothering with.

so by your way of thinking then, why not make a big deal about dara torres not being tied? she got lost gold by only 1/100th of a second too? why do you only single out the phelps race?

The video replay and electronics show he won, but the worst case scenario would have been a tie for 1st, in which case Phelps would still get his eighth gold.

don't expect it on youtube. NBC is always pretty tight with their content... like Leno... on more than 1 occasion they took it off the next day when I posted a short segment. Meanwhile CBS and ABC have allowed things in my experience.

Yeah, that pretty much clears it up.

Anyways, those touch pads on pools are pretty reliable. When I was swimming I heard of them being flaky and not registering, but never going off early or late by 1/100 of a second.

The touch pads are pretty damn accurate with times. If you hit it correctly, it'll register the time. There's no BS monkeying around with the times with the touchpads.

Phelps won, no doubt, people need to let it go.

For those of you that have never been swimmers:

The last 5 yards or so of butterfly is extremely important in a close race. Because of the nature of the stroke you are not always in a constant state of propulsion. In the last several feet is it better to take an additional stroke? Is it better to kick in to the finish?

This is all very situational. Phelps's last few strokes put him in near perfect position at the wall. However his competitor was far enough away form the wall that he needed an additional stroke but too close to the wall to get more than a fraction of the actual pull from the stroke.

It took a great deal of talent, training and effort to win the race as it would any event in the Olympics but what it really comes down to is that Phelps got lucky in this one instance.

Edit:

Forgot to mention that the touch pads do in fact sense the first contact and not the pressure of the palm. If your fingernail hits the pad with enough pressure it will trigger the clock to stop. The reason they use a touchpad system accurate to more than 1/1000 of a second is because the human eye can be deceived while a mechanical system would have to be hacked to be incorrect. Watch summer league swimming and you'll see 2-3 parents standing over each lane of the pool waiting for their eyes to perceive (through all the splashing) when someone touched the wall and exactly who touched the wall first.

The clocks that we used in college were accurate to the 1000th of a second but only reported to the 100th.
