videos messed up

Whenever I go to play a mpeg or an avi the picture is displayed very bright and the colors are all washed out. This happens in windows media player and creative player. When I play mov file or a mpeg or avi in quicktime the picture is fine. What could be causing this problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Computer Info:
This just started a week ago

Have you tried bringing down your gamma settings? display properties-->advanced-->your card-->color correction--> move gamma slider back down to "1" or so.

Have you tried turning off legacy renderer? Windows Media Player --> Tools -> Options -> Performance -> Advanced -> uncheck 1 or both "YUV Flipping" and/or "RGB Flipping"

tried both and still have the problem. This problem is weird because only videos that I play are messed up. In the video editing program I use the preview looks fine but when watched in windows media player the color is all messed up.
