just ordered a JVC HTiB (yeah, i know, what audiophile in there right mind would get a HTiB????) that was posted in hot deals. only has composite inputs, no s-video, component inputs. i have a regular 35" sony trinitron (basic model) tv that's hooked up right now to a panasonic dvd player using s-video connection. will i notice a major quality drop when i go from s-video to composite (using good quality gold plated cables)?

can someone rate visual quality wise, component, s-video, composite on a scale between 1 to 10 (10 being best)? thx!

I can't give an apples to oranges comparison as I went from a 27" RCA with composite to a 16:9 RPTV with component along with a progressive scan DVD.

WOW! What a difference.

I'd say you'd notice an improvement from composite to S-Video and less of a noticeable improvement going from S-Video to component.

thanks for the replies and links..

uh, oh well, might not look as good without the s-video, but it will at least sound better than it used to (currently, not theater system setup) :)

compsite is better than s video, so you should see & hear gains, not losses.

Coax = 1
Composite = 3
S-video = 8
Component 10

Or somewhere thereabouts.

The biggest jump obviously is from composite to s-video.

sorry I meant the kind that video games use, isn't that composite (3 cables, 2 vids and an audio)?

Actually it's video + L/R audio.

And the video quality is dreadful compared to s-video + L/R audio.

woah, composite that bad... hmm..

i was thinking, could i hookup my dvd straight to the tv with s-video cable, and hookup the audio part of the dvd player to the receiver to to process the dolby digital/dts sound stuff?

sounds like it would work, but then again, i know nothing about recievers, home theater systems..

the sites neglected to give resolution #'s, on TV's they only give vertical rez( w/ the exception of hdtv) composite=330 lines of resolution, s-video somewhere around 420,I don't have they figures for component

viper has got it. I'll disagree with the COAX statement because from a cabling persepctive COAX is a great cable (most good composite video cables are coax, Component is just three coax cables)
BUT, terms of generating and carrying a signale composit 3, s-vid8, component 10 is pretty close. Avoid composite like the plague if you can - any video device you have hook it up with svid or component. ESPECIALLY on a good size screen like your 35" trinitron.

OH, and don't skimp on cables. get something other than el-cheapos.

CYA, back to playing HALO in 480p on 65" widescreen in all its 5.1 goodness.
