Jesus. I really hate myself for not getting to the $650 980ti. The best price / perf "flagship" gpu in God knows how long and for how long and I miss it.
We may never see high end prices go back to even some remote sense of normality at this rate. Feels like it's just going to spiral. 2000 series launch is worrying me now for prices on the high end.

The PCB may have the traces to support a 384bit memory bus, but the implementation of this GPU may only be 320 bit.

Also, $1K is steep, I don't think it'll cost more than $899 for the FE, $799 for cheap non FE cards.

You don't know exactly what you're saying. If it's GDDR5X, it doesn't have to maintain the exact mulitple of 2 chips to memory controllers to maintain full speed and access all of the memory. http://www.anandtech.com/show/10325/the-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080-and-1070-founders-edition-review/7

Moving on to implementation details, GP104 brings with it a new memory controller design to support GDDR5X. As intended with the specification, this controller design is backwards compatible with traditional GDDR5, and will allow NVIDIA to support both memory standards. At this point NVIDIA hasn’t talked about what kinds of memory speeds their new controller can ultimately hit, but the cropped signal analysis diagram published in their slide deck shows a very tight eye. Given the fact that NVIDIA’s new memory controller can operate at 8Gbps in GDDR5 mode, I would be surprised if we don’t see at least 12Gbps GDDR5X by the tail-end of Pascal’s lifecycle.

That said, the memory bus may still be cut down, but I doubt the card will have a 320-bit bus with 8gb of GDDR5, as that would result in the exact same bandwidth as the GTX 1080.

Cost has to be $7-800. It can't be $1,000 because anyone willing to spend that would have a Titan already. And yeah, anyone who missed out on the 980ti may have missed one of the best flagship releases in a long time. I can't remember a more exciting release in recent times, and even that's sad because $650 for a flagship should be considered a full blown price tag, but these days we think that's cheap.

980ti has turned out to be a decent card long term. If I was buying today I wouldn't take it over a 1070, but if I was forced to use a machine, and had the choice between a 980ti or a 1070 in there, I would be choosing the aftermarket 980ti because it's consistently a faster card than the 1070.

Probably a comment on how selling the midrange chips as flagship/cut down flagship is starting to catch up on them in realizable performance gains over past cards as much as it is how good 980ti was and GM200's overclocking ability compared to GP104's.

I know what you mean, but $700 is 1080 FE pricing; it's going to be more than that. $999 sounds right if it's pretty close to Titan X performance but not quite, esp at 4K.
 
What if I wait for Vega and Vega price matches Nvidia just like fury x did? People told us to wait for the fury x and look what happened.

We've heard the "wait for the next gpu" and I was definitely apart of the crowd. If you wait you could wait for until Vega sure. But then Volta or pascal refresh will be right around the corner.

With how early the Nvidia chips are releasing ahead of completion you also need to consider the time of actually being able to play.

Currently, while waiting to play, I'm playing old gamecube games. It's a long 6 months until big Vega comes out (you don't change from 1st 1 to 1h unless it's end of h lol)

It didn't really though. It launched at price parity with the cheaper 980Ti models and dropped by another 50€ within two months. 980Ti hybrids were a solid 100 to 150€ more expensive, I assume it was similar in the US.

Anyways, I digress. 10GB does sound like 320 Bit, likely GDDR5x. Unless they went with mixed memory capacities, didn't they do something like that in the Fermi days?
 
Looking at the perf/w gap between Pascal and Polaris, I just don't see how Vega is going to be compelling. AMD promised 2.5x perf/w improvements with Polaris and reality came absolutely nowhere close to that.

P10 needs 25% more bandwidth, 30% more transistors, and 30% more power to keep pace with GP106. Given that GP104 is already 15-20% more efficient than GP106, and given Nvidia's R&D vs. AMD's, the odds are stacked highly against Vega.

I predict small Vega being 5-10% faster than the GTX 1070 with 220 watts power consumption.
 
Nvidia's execution in the current Pascal generation has been extremely fluid. With the 1080FE at $700 pricing the 1080ti at $800-$900 seems kind of low. The difference between the 1070 and 1080 is $230-$250 so it would be kind of weird if the 1080ti would end up only $100 more than the 1080. $900-$1000 Seems about right, unless Nvidia price cuts the 1080 to $500 or $600.

AMD are going to have a hard time even if they come close to Nvidia. But they don't have to beat Nvidia for a product to be compelling. Either way, assuming that Vega comes with HBM it could be very compelling (see Fiji vs Hawaii). Of course, I don't think that perf/watt is that important, especially at the high end (as long as it doesn't really sky rocket, obviously, and temps are OK). Raw perf, and obviously price/perf, is what's important.

Agreed, but power consumption will dictate performance characteristics, especially when there is a TDP ceiling that generally is adhered to (RX 460 vs. 1050 TI slot-only power and 300 watt high end single GPU's per the PCIe spec).

And by compelling, I mean new performance levels at new prices or existing high end at exciting new low end prices. The RX 480 did bring performance to lower prices, but it was unexciting because several last gen products were still faster, more efficient, and there were already several current gen products way, way faster and more efficient at already better perf/$ than last gen.

If Vega is 10% faster than the 1070 and is priced at $350, it's progress on the perf/$ scale but not very compelling or exciting. Also, I don't think small Vega will use HBM, but even if it does its just a bullet point to me. Mhz, die size, and memory types are great conversations but has zero effect on my purchasing decisions.

A late May early June release would mean that Pascal Refresh could release before Vega (Pascal was released May 2016). I find it highly unlikely. I read that H1 as more of a March-April timeline.

Anyway, this is a 1080ti/Nvidia thread and not a Vega thread. Do you guys think that Nvidia will price cut the 1080? Another option would be to kill the 1080FE, I just don't see how they can position the non-FE 1080ti at less than $850 without basically killing the FE 1080 @ $700.

March is Q1 so most likely not March.

Nvidia could either release a 1080 TI or they could just as easily refresh the entire Pascal lineup (faster vram and slightly higher clocks) and have GP102 occupy the 1180 and 1180 TI spot. Either scenario is plausible. I think the refresh scenario is more likely, given that Titan X is already cutdown. The 1180 GP102 could be a third tier GP102, 1180 TI could be the current Titan X, and a new Titan X could be a full functioning GP102.

If they refresh pascal cards GTX1080 will become GTX1170 with faster Ram and this 1080TI will become GTX1180.Just like in kepler generation.GTX1180TI will be full SKU waiting for AMD.

Don't think we'll see it for a while, like. They've got the high-end to themselves right now so it doesn't make much sense to cannibalize their own sales when they could save it as a spoiler and still have the next gen ready to rock in time to own that sector of the market again.

The mid to low end has seen some great competition which has pushed down prices and given us some good cards but the top end is a one company wasteland right now.

If NVIDIA can sell a GTX 1080 Ti for $799 in place of a GTX 1080 for $599, then that'd be a big win for them.

What are you talking about? Their RX 470 and 480 are 40% to 50% faster than their counterparts. The RX 470 which replaces the R9 370 in price and RX 480 which replaces the R9 380 in price. R9 370 $150 TDP, $160-170 aftermarket prices, RX 470 $170 TDP $170-200 aftermarket prices.

R9 380 launched at $200 same as RX 480 4GB. RX480 4GB is 40% to 50% faster, all the while consuming less power.

So their mid range offerings offer up to 50% more performance and up to 30% less power consumption at the same time, that is a major win in my book!
