This is an old Athlon 2800 and A7N8X with ti4800 and a 400 watt Deer PSU that came with the case.
After being on for a few minutes, the screen will go black. I leave it like that for a bit, and a few seconds later the computer restarts and the POST screen comes up all garbled. I shut it down, then start it up again, and everything is normal.
I would immediately see this as a videocard issue if it were not for what sounds like the fan in the PSU varying in speed and rattling, which leads me to believe the PSU is dying...
Another thing I noticed is the cold-cathode lights flickering a bit. Not terribly obvious, but they flicker or change in intensity randomly but regularly.
The fan on the videocard was dying before, and I replaced it like 2 years ago, but since the comp is old now, it hasn't seen much use with the new heatsink/fan. The fan seems to be operating as it should, no grinding or strange sounds. I've never OC'd anything in this comp.
I'm also keeping the PSU in mind because several years ago when I first got that computer I didn't notice I had the voltage switch on the PSU set incorrectly and the videocard gave me a garbled image, and I thought I had a defective card. After RMA and seeing that the new card yielded the same results I noticed the incorrect setting on the PSU and after changing it the videocard worked great.
Thoughts?
