I had been complaining to myself for years about getting healthy. I've always had a pretty healthy diet, so it wasn't too hard to get tighter reigns on that aspect, but working out consistently has been a struggle for me. However, in the beginning of October I realized that my pants were fitting wayyy too tightly for me to ignore it any longer. I decided to get back into it the "lazy" way. Coming out of a depression, with my motivation levels at an all-time low, I decided to rent a couple work-out DVD's from the library. It was amazing how easily I kept up with it, and I still am 3 months later. I haven't weighed myself in a while, but I'm willing to guess I've lost 15-20 lbs already. Height is 5'5", weight was about 158, and now I expect i'm around 140-145. Still have another 15-20 to go.

Sorry for a boring story, but I'm very proud of myself, and delighted that I have found a way to exercise consistently without losing motivation.

Has anyone else found videos helpful? What are your favorite series or individual videos that you've tried? I'm thinking of P90X, Insanity, or Physique 57, but i hear the first two are a little too intense/dangerous if you aren't already in great shape. I think I am in good shape now that I've been working out, but a little worried by reviews and warnings I've read.

I started out with P90X at 280, I modified the hell out of that work out to start. I did Insanity once I was around 220, I'm around 180-190 now depending on what I'm doing, I've been lifting a lot lately so I've been on the heavier side of that but I had great results with both of them. I'm looking to see how if I can get down to 175 and P90X3 actually comes out on the 10th. I'm picking it up and running a challenge group with a few people. So friggen pumped for it!

Nope... sorry, I lift

As silly as it might to someone who "lifts" they actually make video's about lifting. Specifically Body Beast. I've done it its pretty awesome... Straight forward, Good examples, and good routine, set out for you.

I like the videos because it keeps me on task, and I'm in and out quickly without wasting time. I've got kids, and a wife. If I can get any exercise in including lifting in 45 to an hour, vs a few hours having to travel to the gym, and then wait in line etc etc I'll take it. I love the out home work outs.

At any rate, I'm not trying to knock lifting, I love picking things up and putting them down as much as the next guy and there are certainly exercises that doing at the gym is easier, but I there are PLENTY of strength training programs one can do at home that save me a ton of time, and no monthly gym dues are a nice perk as well.

Same here.

I'd rather go to the gym and train but my lifestyle allows for it. No kids, no family and I make the time to get to the gym and train. I also coach a few guys and I have good friends I train with.

I can see the video workouts being useful for people with who don't have the time, have kids or a family etc. I always prefer training with others anyway.

One of the great things about P90x is that they strongly recommend that you go at your own pace. I found the workouts to be very difficult when i started, and definitely paused the video multiple times to catch my breath. Just make sure you get through, and honestly try hard even in the 2nd half of the workouts.

When my wife started her workouts, she would load up youtube for videos of billy blanks, jillian michaels, and whoever else to get a fun variety to her workouts.

I have a wife, and a child.... we are all busy and it all comes down to what you make time for.

I workout at home as well (treadmill/elliptical) but I enjoy going to the gym. No combo of home equipment and videos can replace a gym unless you have a last name like wahlberg
Mark Wahlberg's gym:

I know people that use the T25 or P90X or whatever is trending at the time. No higher % of them them are more in shape than the gym goers I see. I guess why waste time or money on a gym membership? With that argument why even buy the video workouts?

Congrats Lummex, haven't heard from you in a while.

I personally can't work out at home. I associate home with relaxing, and I just can't focus. I need to go lift weights in a gym to get anything useful out of myself.

If need be, I can rack a few sets up push ups, pull ups and body weight stuff..But I don't get a ton out of it. Keep up the good work though?

Any progress pics? Sometimes they are good for motivation to see yourself transforming into a fitter, more leaner you.

Ive used form videos on YouTube and those have been great for me. Even just getting new ideas when things get stale. Ive never tried things like P90x though.

I may post progress pics, but i don't really have great ones from the "before" that show off anything that well. We'll see.

It helps me to not have to take extra time driving and getting ready. I like to minimize the process of stuff as much as possible (as well as cost). But I get everyone needs to find what suits them :) Just very excited that I'm finally getting this done!

I've done both and I enjoy both. They each have their place. I have P90X, P90X2, Volume 1 of the One-on-One series with Tony Horten, and Insanity. Sometimes, if I'm bored or want a quick change from the free weights, I'll pop in a P90X workout. Not often, but once in a while.

I didn't use to, but I do now. They have helped me correct my squat. They are useful.

*Oops I thought you meant taking videos of yourself working out. Nah I just lift, lol.*

Here's some progress pics. This first one is about 2 weeks after I started working out, so sort of at the beginning.

This one is from last week, about 3 months in. I'm half way to my goal.

Kinda hard to tell fully, but I certainly can see the difference, and I feel so much better in general. Started at 158 lbs, last I checked was at 145 lbs. Still going strong! :)
