I have recently become responsible for the projection system for worship at church. Basically, we use a program called easyworship, which, from what I can tell uses DirectX to display video files (mpg, etc) fullscreen with text overlayed on top of the video file.

On a laptop with athlon xp 2500+ and a igp320m (basically a 7000 with shared ram), it lags(on 800x600) any time I try to transition the text.

Basically, we have another laptop with a slightly more powerful GPU (xpress200m), but it will be a pain to transfer the software, etc to that computer. My question is, would a faster GPU help speed up things since afaik, this is 2d rendereing? Or is the problem in the CPU speed?

It probably depends on your application, but the older card using overlay mixer to display text over the video using slower/poorer color-keying, where if it were to use the newer Video Mixing Renderer it uses much better/faster alpha blending. The Xpress200m supports DX9 and Video mixing render 9 and should give better performance in either case, but it would probably depend on the software. The 2500m is a fairly robust processor.
